Normally open only to members and their guests, the DYC Foundation provides the general public an opportunity to tour the historic Detroit Yacht Club clubhouse through scheduled tours. The University of Michigan Club of Greater Detroit has organized a private tour and luncheon for our group.
Tour leaders are trained in the history and architecture of this building that is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Tours typically last between 60 and 90 minutes. After the tour, we will meet up for a buffet lunch in the DYC’s Grill Restaurant.
One of the architectural treasures of Detroit, the clubhouse was designed by the George D. Mason Company in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. George Mason was also the architect of numerous significant buildings, including the Masonic Temple, Gem Theater/Century Club and the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. Dedicated by Detroit industrialist Gar Wood on August 30, 1923, the DYC clubhouse encompasses 93,000 square feet, making it the largest, and probably the grandest, yacht club facility in the United States.
