Alexis Alati

International Academy
Frederick C Matthaei Scholarship
2023/2024
Having obtained her Certified Nursing Assistant License and having a passion for taking care of others, Alexis plans to enroll in the Nursing School this fall. She has taken a full International Baccalaureate course load throughout high school, excelling in classes such as IB Biology, Chemistry, and French, and maintaining Summa Cum Laude academic status throughout. In school, Alexis has served as a Peer Corps Mentor and Ambassador, Helping Hands Nonprofit Fundraising Officer, and National Honors Society Member. She has also been an active member of her community by serving as an Election Inspector Co-chairperson, First Company Dancer in Eisenhower Dance Detroit's Youth Ensemble, and a babysitter throughout the neighborhood. Alexis placed Top 6 for her ensemble dance at the Youth America Grand Prix and was also awarded the President's Volunteer Service Award.

Om Joshi

International Academy
Frederick C Matthaei Scholarship
2023/2024
Om Joshi is a senior at International Academy Central and plans to pursue a dual degree with Computer Science through the College of Engineering and Finance through the Ross School of Business. Om is a Varsity tennis player and has participated in FIRST Robotics for 8 years, leading the programming and electrical subsystems. Om has participated in high level research, winning 3rd Place Overall at the Michigan Science and Engineering Fair and 1st Place at the Science and Engineering Fair of Metro Detroit along with many professional awards. He has taken several IB classes as he looks to earn his IB diploma this summer while maintaining a 4.0 unweighted GPA. He is also President of his school's Math Club, Investing Club and Programming Club. He has won the Congressional App Challenge twice while creating a number of mobile apps, ranging from wildfire alert apps to gunshot detection alert systems. He founded his own coding nonprofit called Todocode while also mentoring younger FLL and FTC robotics teams.
 

Hannah DiGiovanni

2022/2023
Hannah plans to enroll in the College of LSA to study biology. Hannah was active in a variety of school activities, including National Honors Society, Medical Club, Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), Troy School District Superintendent Student Advisory Board, and Troy Athletic Advisory Council. She was a member of Student Council all four years, serving as Vice President her senior year. Hannah was also part of cross country and track and field for all four years and was team captain for both teams for her junior and senior years. She took a total of 10 AP classes and many other honors classes while maintaining a 4.3 GPA. Her high-achieving nature led her to earning a variety of awards, such as AP Scholar with Distinction, Scholar Athlete, Summa Cum Laude, AP with WE Service Recognition, MHSAA Scholar-Athlete Award Finalist, and Cross Country Team Hawk of the Year. Hannah was also an active member in her community, serving as a small group leader in the children’s program at her church every Sunday. She also led a food drive for the Troy School District, delivered baskets of food every Thanksgiving to those in need, raked leaves for the elderly in her city, was a member of her church’s high school program, and served as a middle school track and field camp volunteer. 

Aubrey Hickmott

2022/2023
Aubrey plans to enroll in the College of Engineering and is the recipient of the Frederick C. Matthaei scholarship. Aubrey finished first in her class with a weighted GPA of 4.375. Aubrey had a rigorous academic curriculum, including AP classes in US Government, Statistics, World History, Biology, Language, Physics, Microeconomics, Literature, and Calculus. She was a member of the Business Professionals of America Club, Link Crew, as well as Class Treasurer and Vice President of the National Honors Society. Aubrey was a 4 year member, 2 year captain, on the Girls Varsity Soccer team where she earned all league and all district athletic honors. Aubrey was also a 2 year member of the Varsity Volleyball team. She earned AP Scholar With Distinction as well as Flint Metro League academic honors. 

Alexis Fisher

Alexis is a graduate from Bedford High School and is enrolled in the University of Michigan College of LS&A. She is the recipient of the Frederick C. Matthaei Scholarship. Alexis took many Honors and AP classes, such as Calculus AB, Psychology, Biology, World History, and English Language. She is graduating with a 4.2 GPA. Alexis was very involved in robotics, 4-H, and dance. She served as the Captain of the robotics team, the President of multiple 4-H clubs, and as a district youth 4-H representative. Through these programs, she was also very involved in the community through various service projects. Alexis mentored many younger robotics teams throughout high school. In 2019, she was inducted into the National Honor Society, and also was a part of the SEC All Academic team as a senior

Alicia Qin

Alicia plans to enroll in the Ross School of Business and is the recipient of the Frederick C. Matthaei Scholarship. Alicia maintained an unweighted GPA of 4.0 throughout high school with a rigorous coursework, including ten AP courses. In school, Alicia served as president of the GET-IT club as well as a board member of the Eco Club. Athletically, she was captain of the varsity tennis team, competed on the varsity cross country team, and is classically trained in the Cecchetti ballet method grade 5. Outside of school, Alicia served on the BEAT team of the Michigan Youth Empowerment Foundation and as the Social Media Director of inteGIRLS Detroit. She is an avid artist, winning several Gold and Silver Keys in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, and she has performed the piano at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Throughout high school, Alicia has been commended as a National AP Scholar as well as a National Merit Scholarship recipient.


Parker Szachta

2021/2022
Parker Szachta is from Clarkston High School in Clarkston, MI, where he finds the excitement in math! He will be his school’s Valedictorian with a weighted GPA above 4.5, and he is a National AP Scholar. He will attend the University of Michigan College of Engineering and is interested in being a Computer Science or Data Science major. He also is a Math Club Co-Captain and Co-Founder, where he brought two math competitions to his school. He earned the highest score of 191 Michigan Math Prize Competition tests taken at his school, and he took AP Calculus BC in 9th grade. Parker also likes spreading the excitement of progress to others: he spent over two years on his school’s FIRST Robotics Competition Hall of Fame team, Team RUSH. He was the Business/Media Subteam Captain and oversaw six students in creating weekly newsletters about the team. He also coached eight third-graders in FIRST LEGO League Junior through weekly meetings. Parker wants to make another passionate project in college: a website sharing mental health forums and resources. This way, he would spread positivity and optimism to unite people!

Riya Aggarwal

2020/2021

Riya plans to enroll in the College of LS&A and is the recipient of the Frederick C. Matthaei Scholarship. Riya finished in the Top 10% of her class, with a weighted GPA of 4.15. Riya took multiple AP classes, which included World History, Chemistry, Statistics, U.S. Government, Studio Art, English Literature, Biology and Calculus. As a pianist, she performed at the school choir concert. Riya was the school representative for the Indian American Student Association, National Honor Society member and a member of the UCMST Administrator Advisory Board. Athletically, Riya was captain of the Varsity swim team her senior year. In her spare time, Riya interned at Alamat Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and actively participated in ISKCON, community service and religious activities at her temple. Throughout her high school career, Riya earned AP Scholar with Honor, National Scholastics Competition Honorable Mention, National Merit Commended Scholar and All State Academic Team for Excellence in Athletics and Academics.

Nicole Dillman

2020/2021

Nicole plans to enroll in the College of Engineering and is the recipient of the Frederick C. Matthaei Scholarship. Nicole finished first in her class with an unweighted 4.0 GPA, while taking a demanding academic course curriculum; which included Chemistry, Biology, Statistics, Physics, Computer Science, Calculus, Language and Composition. Nicole was an active member of the National Honor Society, German American Exchange Program, Key Club and Generation Global team. She was a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist and a National Finalist for Chemistry Olympiad. Nicole was a recipient of the English Department Academic Award, Technology Department Academic Award and Gold Honor Roll. Outside of academics, Nicole was a member of the Track and Field team being captain her senior year, Cross Country team and ski team. In her spare time, Nicole interned at an engineering company and volunteered with National Honor Society and Key Club.

Austin Cornish

Austin plans to enroll in the College of LS&A and is the recipient of the Frederick C. Matthaei Scholarship. Austin was well-rounded academically and athletically. Austin took multiple AP classes, which included Computer Science principles, U.S. History, Biology, World History, Physics, Psychology, Chemistry, Calculus and Language and Competition. He was a member of the Armada High School cross country, track and basketball. He was team captain of the cross country team. He was also a member of the National Honor Society, PAL leadership team, nature club, beta club and HOSA. Austin earned National Merit Commended Scholar, AP scholar with distinction, All-Academic Cross Country and Academic All-State Cross Country. James was an active member of his community, volunteering for PAL camp, tutoring, food drives, fundraisers, Armada Holly days and Relay for Life.

James Gu

2019/2020

James plans to enroll in the College of Engineering and is the recipient of the Frederick C. Matthaei Scholarship. James had a very rigorous academic course curriculum, including a total number of thirteen AP classes. On top of his academic schedule, he was an active member of in-school clubs, which include Science Olympiad, Biology Competitions Club, Health Occupations Students of America, Project LEAD and student government. Throughout those clubs, he was Student Government Class President Sophomore year, biology competitions club vice president and Project LEAD treasurer. He was also on the varsity swim team all four years of high school and team captain. James volunteered his time at the Beaumont Hospital as well. James earned many awards, which include National AP scholar, United States of America Biology Olympiad Semifinalist, International Biology Scholar, United States President’s Volunteer Service Award Bronze Level and National Merit Commended Student. James also earned Regional Finalist in National Science Bowl Competition and Detroit Science & Engineering Fair Excellent Award in Molecular Biology Category.

Kaitlyn Barr

2018/2019
Katilyn Barr is one of the 2018 recipients of the Fredrick C. Mattaei Scholarship. She is a graduate of International Academy Central and plans to enroll in the School of Engineering. Caitlin has taken multiple IB classes and received various awards including being a National Merit Semifinalist, receiving the Gold Presidential Volunteer Service Award, and receiving second in the state for Personal Finance Challenge. She was a dancer for the Indian American Student Association and a member of both the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society. Caitlin also served as lead altar server for St. Hugo of the Hills Parish Community as well as participating in the Hispanic Outreach Tutoring for ESL Elementary School Students.

Matthew Person

2018/2019
Matthew Person is a Lakeland High School graduate and plans to enroll in the College of LS&A with the hopes of joining the Ross School of Business. He is a recipient of the Fredrick C. Matthaei Scholarship. Matthew was a member of both the Varsity Cross Country and Varsity Track team all four years and served as Student Body Class President. He was also the treasurer of National Honor society his junior and senior years. Matthew was a guitar player in Church Praise Band and participated in Flint, Michigan Missions Trip roofing houses. He took multiple AP classes including Psychology, United States History, Microeconomics, and Macroeconomics while maintaining a 4.3 weighted GPA. He received AP Scholar with Distinction and was named a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist his senior year. 

Tristan Klein

Tristan Klein plans to enroll in the School of Engineering and is a recipient of the Frederick C. Matthaei Scholar-ship.  Tristan has been active in school activities including Business Club President, Model United Nations Club President, Student Body Vice-President, and a member of the Spring and Fall Varsity Sailing Team. He has taken the most demanding Honors & AP classes such as European History, Biology, and Physics. Tristan has also been a volunteer at Trends for Teens Non-Profit, Christ Child Officer, and participated in a Peru Immersion Trip. His senior year he was a DECA District Champion and made the A Honor Roll.

Julia Toye

South Lyon High School

Julia Toye plans to enroll into the School of Engineering and is a recipient of the Frederick C. Matthaei Scholar-ship. Julia has taken many AP Classes including Chemistry, Calculus AB, Microeconomics, and US Government and Politics while maintaining a 4.17 GPA. She served as captain of the Varsity Soccer team, Vice President of the National Honor Society, a member of Student Council, and a member of Michigan Jaguars FC Club Soccer Re-gional Team. She is active with Bottle for Families in Need Bottle Drive, tutoring, and Youth Volunteer for Salem-South Lyon District Library. Julia earned many awards, both academically and athletically, including being a Na-tional Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalist, KLAA Gold Scholar Athlete, and KLAA All-Conference for Girls’ Soccer.

Michael Wolf

2017/2018
Michael Wolf graduated from Saline High School in Saline, MI and is one of this year’s recipients of the Frederick C. Matthaei Scholarship. He was a Section Leader of the SHS Marching Band and participated in FRC Robotics, Jazz Band, and Varsity Tennis. He was also a member of the Boy Scouts of America, where he achieved Eagle rank through his Eagle Scout Service Project. He was a member of the National Honor Society and was an usher at St Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church. He was a National Merit Semifinalist and a Michigan Mathematics Prize Competition Finalist. He had a GPA of 4.32 and a 35 on her ACT test. He completed 8 advanced placement classes including Chemistry, History, Statistics, and Biology.

Sierra Bowden

2016/2017

Sierra Bowden graduated from Salem High School in Canton, MI and is one of this year’s recipients of the Frederick C. Matthaei Scholarship.  She was a captain of the Salem Girls Cross Country team and participated in Salem Organization of Student Athletes, PCCS Ski Club, and PCCS Art Show.  She was a volunteer swim coach at East Middle School and tutored for Honors Biology. She was a member of the National Honor Society and a National Merit Semifinalist.  She had a GPA of 4.33 and a 36 on her ACT test.  She completed 7 advanced placement classes including World History, Biology, Macroeconomics, and Calculus BC.

Hope Norris

Hope Norris plans to enroll in the College of LS&A and is a recipient of the Frederick C. Matthaei Scholarship.  Hope has been active in school activities including Prom Committee, National Honors Society, LINK Leader, and the Hartland High School Band. She has taken the most demanding Honors & AP classes such as US History, Calculus BC, and Language and Composition. Hope has also been a volunteer at Cromaine District Library where she shelved books, prepared crafts, and organized library-sponsored activities. Her senior year she earned the College Board AP Scholar with Distinction.

Austin Dudas

Austin is planning to enroll in the college of LS&A and is a recipient of the Frederick C. Matthaei Scholarship.  He has taken various AP classes and received numerous awards both academically and athletically.  Austin balances his academics with many hours of extra-curricular activities & community related events including tutoring and Community Service Club.  He has learned valuable lessons by starting his own business at the age of 16 and placed first in an international game development competition for students.  Austin’s character, sense of humor, cutting wit, ability to adapt and the impact he makes on his peers are some of his strongest traits.

Bethany is one of the 2015 recipients of the Frederick C. Matthaei Scholarship.  She is a graduate of Saline High School and plans to enroll in the college of LS&A.  Bethany has taken many AP classes and received various awards including the honor roll award by maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or more all 4 years of high school.  She has been active in CTE Advanced Photography class and operates her own photography business.  She has been a member of the Girls State Program, National Honors Society, Key Club, Link Crew Leader, Cross Country and Track & Field.  Bethany has a huge heart and volunteers at an elementary school in track & field and at an Evangelical Home.  Trustworthy, dependable, hard-working, knowledgeable and kind-hearted are words used to describe Bethany.

Shantam Ravan

2015/2016

Shantam Ravan graduated from Churchill High School in Livonia, MI and is one of this year’s recipients of the Frederick C. Matthaei Scholarship.  He was the captain of the school’s robotics and Quiz Bowl teams.  He played varsity tennis and is a black belt in Tung Soo Do.  He was a member of the National Honor Society and a National Merit Semifinalist.  He had a GPA of 4.53 and a 36 on his ACT test.  He completed 7 advanced placement classes and has already completed 9 college credit hours.

Michael Jenuwine

Troy Athens High School

2014/2015

Michael A. Jenuwine is a graduate of Troy Athens High School. His GPA is the fourth highest ever at Athens High School. Michael completed 11 AP classes and two semesters of Dual Enrollment in Math. He attended the Georgetown University International Relations Summer Institute following his sophomore year and the Michigan Math and Science Scholars Program at the University of Michigan following his junior year. Between 2009 and 2012 Michael completed four distance courses through the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth.

Michael served as Vice President and President for Athens High School Model United Nations. He was elected President of National Honor Society and the Federal Reserve Challenge Club. Michael is a gifted cello player and was selected to be in the Athens Symphony Orchestra as a freshman. He was accepted to play with the Metropolitan Youth Symphony, which is the top regional organization for youth. Michael also participates with the Rochester Conservatory of Music. Michael is also an invaluable member of the Athens Theatre Company.

Michael recognizes that to be his personal best he needs to give to others and finds value in service work. He volunteers at the Lighthouse of Oakland County, a Counselor at the Roeper Summer Day Camp and he has shared his gift of music with multiple churches and nursing homes.  His counselor was quoted as saying
“Michael will be remembered as one of the greatest minds to ever walk the halls of Athens High."

Erinjen Lin

2014/2015

Erinjen Lin is the 2014 recipient of the Frederick C. Matthaei Scholarship.  She is a graduate of Chelsea High School.  She graduated number 1 in her class with a 4.0 GPA.  She served as the Captain of both the high school tennis and golf team.  She was the Vice President of student council and a member of the National Honors Society.  She has worked very hard with the high school Link Crew, which allows upperclassmen to mentor students entering the 8th grade at the high school.  She served as the President of the Link Crew this past year.  During the summers, she volunteers to help teach tennis and golf to area children.  She will enter the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan.

Daniel Wu

Daniel Wu is the 2014 recipient of the Frederick C. Matthaei Scholarship.  He is a graduate of West Bloomfield High School.  He is going to attend the University of Michigan’s College of Engineering.  Daniel served as Secretary and Vice President of the high school student council as a junior and senior.  He was the captain of the high school tennis team and played varsity tennis for 3 years.  He is an accomplished violinist and has volunteered to play in the lobby of the Henry Ford Hospital to provide a calming and relaxing atmosphere for patients and guests.   His passion is the environment which he learned from his grandfather.  During his high school career, he advanced many programs concerning the environment from recycling and raising the awareness of our environment, to fundraising for several environmental programs.

Luke A. Roggenkamp

2013/2014

Luke Roggenkamp received one of the two awards that embodies the qualities recognized by the Frederick C. Matthaei Scholarship. Luke graduated #1 in his class of 472 from Brighton High School. He will be entering the College of Engineering this Fall and is planning on a career as a Chemical Engineer. Besides Luke's high academic achievements, he played high school soccer all four years, and has been playing Club Soccer since 2002. Luke is a member of SADD, National Honor Society and the Brighton High School Mentoring Program. Luke is a true volunteer. He is a Youth Soccer Coach, participates in the Livingston County Rotating Homeless Shelter, the United Way Day of Caring and Brighton Community Gardens. Luke spent a week at the United States Naval Academy Leadership Seminar in Annapolis. In Luke's own words: "My time at the Naval Academy provided me the opportunity to learn from the future leaders of our country. I learned what honor is! I learned what respect is! My name will be attached to my actions, and now I have a new found pride in my name." To a future leader, Luke Roggenkamp.

Amelia E. Waters

Amelia Waters was awarded one of the two scholarships established by Frederick C. Matthaei. Amelia has outstanding achievements in academics, music, athletics, and community service. She graduated from Saline High School with highest honors. Amelia will enter LSA this Fall with a major in Biology. Besides serving as a class officer, Amelia held offices in the National Honor Society and Rotary International. She was a member of the Lacross and Field Hockey Teams. Amelia received the highest award possible from the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association fro Solo and Ensemble. She is a member of Saline Fiddlers, as a violinist and as a dancer, with more than 40 volunteer performances each year since her Freshman year in High School. Amelia has worked as a soccer referee for Saline Area Soccer Association and is self-employed as a private violin teacher for elementary and middle school students. Amelia embodies the qualities recognized by the Matthaei Scholarship. Nicholas Adamowicz

Nicholas Adamowicz is the recipient of one of two scholarships in honor of Fred Matthaei. In addition to achieving nearly perfect test scores, Nicholas impressed his teachers by continuously seeking feedback outside of class for an optimal learning experience and giving generously of this time and energy to tutor peers. Nicholas embodies the qualities honored by the Matthaei Scholarship.

Caleigh Chong

Caleigh Chong is the recipient of one of the two scholarships in honor of Fred Matthaei. She has outstanding achievements in academics, music, athletics, and community service. Caleigh participated at the college level with the University of Michigan Youth Ensemble and as a lab assistant to graduate students in Chemistry and Biochemistry labs. Kevin Daniels

2011/2012
Kevin Daniels graduated from Walled Lake Northern High School. He participated in Student Council, Marching Band, Soccer, and Track and Field. He was also a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society. He took and excelled in multiple Advanced Placement courses while at Walled Lake Northern, earning A's in each one. He is also very involved with his church's youth group, and does a mission trip each year with that group.

Max Olender

Max Olender graduated from Detroit Country Day High School. He is the other recipient of a Frederick C. Matthaei Scholarship. Max participated in Varsity Soccer, Fencing Club, Environmental Club, Digital Filmmaking Club and the Cum Laude Society. He also actively participates in Boy Scouts of America, earning numerous leadership positions, including Eagle Scout. He also has been honored with numerous awards for his scholastic achievements.

Chelsea L. Fournier

Chelsea Fournier attended Eisenhower High School and is one of two recipients of the Frederick C. Matthael Scholarships. She also took classes at the Utica Center for Math, Science and Technology. She participated in FIRST Robotics, Marching Band, Student Council, National Honor Society, Relay for Life and Thunderquest Lego Robotics Competition. She also took numerous Advanced Placement courses within which she excelled.

Alexandria Miller

Alexandria Miller is the other recipient of the Frederick C. Matthael Scholarship. She graduated from Dakota High School where she compiled an outstanding academic record. She participated in the National Honor Society, Student Government, Varsity Dance Team, Cultural Diversity & International Club, math tutoring and several Advanced Placement courses. She also volunteered at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, Macomb Road Clean-Up and served as a tutor for Elementary School students. She will be taking pre-medicine courses at the University of Michigan.

Jonathan Gold

Jonathon Gold is this year’s recipient of one of two Frederick C. Matthaei Scholarships. Jonathon compiled an outstanding record of academic achievement at Troy Athens High School. Jonathon participated as a member the National Honor Society Executive Board, Physics Club Co-President, Federal Reserve Challenge – Core presenter and as Section Leader of the Marching Band. He was a National Merit Semi-Finalist, won 2nd Place in the U of M Physics Olympiad, and excelled in the Michigan math Competition. Jonathon embodies the attributes and qualities that we wish to acknowledge with the Matthaei Scholarship.

Dana Litz is the recipient of the other Frederick C. Matthaei Scholarship. Dana graduated with high honors from Adlai E. Stevenson High School. During high school, Dana compiled a sterling academic record of achievement in primarily AP classes. In addition, Dana participated in the following: Key Club, National Honors Society, Varsity Cross Country, Varsity Track, Spanish Club, Yearbook (Editor), Concert Band, Marching band and Jazz Band. Notably, she also held a part-time job. Further, Dana was recipient of the Girl Scout Gold and Silver Awards.

Catherine Kent is a recipient of one of two Frederick C. Matthaei Scholarships. Catherine graduated from Franklin High School with high honors. She participated as the Captain of the Varsity Swimming Team, President of Inter ACT Club, President of National Honor Society, United Nations, Track and Field and Freshman Mentoring. In addition, she achieved numerous honors and accolades while in high school, including National Merit Semi-Finalist, AP Scholar with honors, Livonia PTSA outstanding youth award, Coaches' Award for swimming, three school records in relay for swimming and various other achievements as well. Within her community, Catherine found time to participate as President of the Library Teen Advisory Committee, Church Youth Group, Interamural Swimming, Relay for Life, Early Literacy Volunteer and various other community and extra -curricular activities.

Paul J. Nagel is the recipient of the other Frederick C. Matthaei Scholarship for 2008. Paul graduated from Father Gabriel Richard High School at the top of his class. Within the community, Paul has participated during high school as a member of the Boys Scouts of America, and is on the verge of completing his requirements for Eagle Scout. He has also volunteered his time assisting elderly and disabled citizens within the community. In addition, Paul was a Kairos Retreat Leader, participated on a Mexico Mission Trip and was the producer and editor of high school films. During high school, Paul compiled 13 top student awards for his various academic achievements and rankings. Undoubtedly, Paul will be a welcome addition to the University of Michigan and we are pleased to offer him a scholarship.

Ashley Anderson, another recipient of the 2007 Frederick C. Matthei Scholarship, is a graduate of Detroit Renaissance High School. Ashley’s remarkable accomplishments inside and outside the classroom made her the subject of an article in the June 17, 2007 Detroit Free Press. Despite battling lupus and an autoimmune disorder that prevents blood from clotting, Ashley graduated from Renaissance with a 3.9 grade point average, winning numerous awards and accolades. She has been accepted into the University of Michigan’s honors program and plans to pursue a liberal arts major.

Rhonda Wang is one of two recipients of the 2007 Frederick C. Matthei Scholarship. Rhonda is a graduate from Ann Arbor Huron High School, where she graduated with highest honors. Not only did Rhonda excel in the classroom, but her passion for service was evident in her volunteer work with the Red Cross and as a team leader with the “FAST” program that provides CPR/First Aid volunteers to University of Michigan athletic events. Rhonda was also active in the Ann Arbor Figure Skating Club and co-captained her varsity Skating team. In addition, Rhonda participated in Mathematics competitions, as well as Business Professionals in America, which is a national co-curricular organization for students interested in business. Rhonda won top honors in six key competitive events from her freshman through senior years in Business Professionals in America.

Christy Sulaiman

Christy Sulaiman is one of two recipients of the Frederick C. Matthei Scholarship Award. Christy plans to attend medical school and become a medical doctor so that she may care for and assist others in the future. As a student, she was a Class Officer, Student Council Representative and Trustee of the National Honor Society. Within the community, she was a volunteer in nursing homes, volunteered at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen and served as a Eucharistic Minister within her church. Christy has achieved many scholastic and academic awards while compiling a most impressive record in high school. Christy is the first person in her family to not only graduate from high school, but to attend college, and is determined to use her talents and abilities to encourage others to pursue their dreams and goals.

Jenna Utter is one of two recipients of the Frederick C. Matthei Scholarship Award. Jenna embodies the characteristics that have come to be recognized through the years by the Frederick C. Matthei Scholarship. Jenna will be pursuing a degree from the School of Art and Design at the University of Michigan. Jenna has participated in the following clubs and teams: National Honor Society, President of the Drama Club, International Thespian Society, Forensics Team, German Club, Attic Salt Literary Magazine, Pro-Life Club, Theater, Band, Traveling Children’s Show and Tutoring Club. In her community, she has participated in the Girl Scouts of America, Michigan Young Women for Change, taught 2nd grade art, KidSpeak, the Michigan Educational Theater Association, the Trick or Treat so Kids Can Eat Charity Drive, assisted the mentally handicapped by coaching a softball team, volunteered at the soup kitchen and also worked at a department store. Jenna has also received the following honors and awards: Academic Excellence Award, Leadership Award, various forensics tournament awards and German Award. It is evident in the foregoing that Jenna will be a tremendous asset to the University of Michigan.

Hanan Beydoun is a remarkable young woman. She graduated from Crestwood High School as valedictorian of her class. In addition to her academic achievements, Hanan displayed her athletic prowess as a member of her high school basketball, volleyball and track teams. Not surprisingly, Hanan participated in many clubs and activities at Crestwood High, including the Key Club, French Club, and National Honor Society. As a contributing member of her community, Hanan participated in efforts to clean up the Rouge River and Hines Drive. Hanan is a bright, intelligent, and well-rounded young women who embodies the qualities that our club honors with the Frederick C. Matthaei Scholarship.

Ryan McKee is a graduate of Roseville High School where he attained a high degree of academic excellence. Ryan participated as a member of the school’s Quiz Bowl Team, Spanish Club, Varsity Swimming Team, and Student Assembly. He tutored students as well. As a versatile young man, Ryan is a member of the Rosebowl Bowling League and a green belt in Naama Karate. His ability to maintain a part time job for the past two years evidences Ryan’s work ethic. The awards and accolades that Ryan achieved while in high school are too numerous to mention specifically, but suffice it to say, Ryan will be an outstanding asset to the University of Michigan. Tamara Anthony is a graduate of Pontiac Central High School. She plans to major in Mathematics or Science at the University of Michigan. She served as treasurer of the National Honor Society. Ms. Anthony helped build a school in Mali, W. Africa in February, 2003. She was a member of her high school robotics team. She will be a wonderful addition to the University. Ms. Anthony is a capable young woman with many talents. She is remarkably humble given the many achievements she has already attained in her life.

Christopher Gentz is a graduate of Lakeview High School in St. Clair Shores. He compiled a remarkable academic record while in high school. Impressively, Mr. Gentz participated in team sports and many extracurricular activities. He played soccer, ran cross-country and track and served as captain of his varsity basketball team. In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Mr. Gentz also assumed leadership roles in a variety of student organizations, including the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. He served as President of his senior class and actively participated in student congress playing a large role in several community service projects. He has volunteered his time for the Red Cross, Goodfellows, Cops for Kids, an orphanage in Bosnia, Toys for Tots and March of Dimes.
