2024/2025
Aryaman has enrolled in the College of Engineering and will be studying Computer Engineering. He is the Team Leader of his school's Forensics team, mentoring over 30 students and competing in over 16 tournaments. He has also played the Tabla (Indian Classical Percussion Instrument) for over 12 years and has won international-level awards in competitions. He is an avid leader as president of his HOSA Parliamentary Procedure team and co-founder of Novi High School's Diversity Club. He participated in Varsity Debate and was a Link Crew Leader as well. 2023/2024
Rafe has enrolled in the College of Engineering and will be studying computer science. Rafe is the sole creator, developer, and designer of the video game Land of the Mage Lords, which has thousands of players across the world in 112 countries. He is the First Author of the paper “Differential MERS-CoV in Different Cell Types,” published in the Journal of Emerging Investigators. Rafe is a member of the Mircore Volunteer Program, where he does computational biology research. He is the President of Math Tutoring Center, Co-President of GIDAS, a Link Crew Leader, a Writing Center Consultant, and a member of NHS. Rafe received a perfect score on the AP Computer Science A exam, an AP Scholar with Distinction Award, and is a member of the Study of Exceptional Talent. I plan to enroll in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and pursue the pre-medical track. Throughout high school, I was very involved in clubs and activities. I served as an administrative director for my school’s National Honor Society chapter which included more than 400 students. I also had the privilege to serve as a chair for SJ5K, a club that hosts an annual 5k to support families in our community battling medical crises. Furthermore, to learn about my future area of study, I took part in the Future Health Professionals club. Outside of the classroom, I was very active. I swam on my school’s varsity team for four years and was a state qualifier for relays. In my free time, I enjoy spending time outside and cheering for Michigan sports! Go Blue!Annmarie Guarino

2021/2022
Annmarie Guarino is the recipient of the 2021/2022 Harold duCharme Scholarship, and has been accepted into the College of Engineering in Ann Arbor where she will study Chemical and Biomedical Engineering. She attended Divine Child High School, where she graduated in the top 10% of her class (earning a cumulative GPA of 4.51 GPA in a rigorous 4-year pre-engineering curriculum that included 8 AP courses and 8 Honors courses). She was elected as the Senior Drum Major of the 90-member competitive High School Marching Band, and was known for taking extra time to mentor new band members, section leaders, and sophomore and junior drum majors. She was also elected President of the Symphonic Band, and ultimately awarded both the John Philip Sousa National Band Award, and the Outstanding Leadership in Band Award. She held executive positions in both the Model United Nations Organization and the school’s Astronomy Club. The College Board and the Society of Women Engineers have bestowed upon her the National AP Scholar with Distinction Award and the Michigan Tech University Certificate of Merit (respectively). Annmarie is well known for volunteer service with several local charitable organizations including Gleaners Food Bank and the Dearborn Animal Shelter.
Jocelyn Zhang

2020/2021
Jocelyn Zhang plans to enroll in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts and is the recipient of the Harold duCharme Scholarship. Jocelyn was an active member of the Huron’s Genes in Diseases and Symptoms Club and Huron’s chapter of Business Professionals in America. She was part of the Varsity Women’s cross country team and a clarinetist in Huron’s symphony band and marching band all four years. Jocelyn achieved multiple academic awards, including 4-time Top 17% of Michigan Math Prize Competition, National Merit Scholarship semifinalist, 2019 Purple Comet Math Meet International Honorable Mention, National AP Scholar and Michigan Business Professionals of America Statesman Torch Award Recipient. Academically, she has taken advantage of the most rigorous AP classes including U.S. History, Chinese Language, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, U.S. Government, Microeconomics, English Language, Statistics, Calculus, Computer Science and Spanish Language. Jocelyn has also generously given her time and energies to her community as a high school counselor at Rec & Ed Summer camps, Science Olympiad Coach at King Elementary School and student teacher at Ann Arbor Math Olympiad club.
Josh Zhe

2019/2020
Josh plans to enroll in the College of Engineering and is the recipient of the Harold Ducharme Scholarship. Josh was the Science Olympiad Captain, the editor in chief for his high school newsletter and the co-founder of VISION. He is a pianist and participated in the cross country and track and field teams. Josh was very active in his community, volunteering at multiple locations, which included Sunrise Senior Living, One World Surgery Honduras Medical Brigade, Henry Ford Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital. Josh took various AP courses: chemistry, psychology, Chinese, biology, calculus and U.S. History. Josh earned AP Scholar with Distinction, a National Merit Semifinalist, 3rd place at the Michigan State Science fair and 1st place in the Albion International Piano Competition. Josh was also the grand prize winner of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers professional award.

Jensen Hwa has been selected as the Harold DuCharme Scholarship winner and plans to register in the School of Engineering. At West Bloomfield High School, he was President of the Health Science Club, President of the Environmental Club, and captain of the Debate team. He was also a volunteer at Relay for Life of West Bloomfield, Optimist Club of West Bloomfield, and a website consultant at West Bloomfield School District Public Relations. Jensen received numerous awards including 2018 Coca-Cola Scholar Semifinalist, National Merit Semifinalist, and Michigan Math Prize Exam School Winner. Ashley Carroll is a Grosse Pointe North High School graduate and plans to enroll in the College of LS&A. She is the recipient of the Harold duCharme Scholarship. Ashley has been a member of JV and Varsity Tennis and served as Student Council Vice President. She was also a member of the National Honor Society her junior and senior years. Ashley was a Special Olympics volunteer, organizer of Little Girls Night Out, and a participant in Michigan Dog Rescue fundraiser. She took multiple AP classes including US History, English Language & Composition, and Chemistry while maintaining a 4.3 GPA. inducted into the National Honor Society in December 2014. Tabitha was
Executive Board Vice President and a class representative all four years of
high school. She took multiple AP classes including Calculus BC, Psychology,
and Physics while maintaining a 3.98 GPA. She volunteers with Relay for Life
where she was a team captain in 2015-2016 and she also volunteers as a tutor of

Rachel Smith, the winner of the Harold DuCharme Scholarship, graduated from Stevenson High School with a 4.4123 GPA & she is applying to the College of Engineering. While maintaining her standing as a Summa Cum Laude Rachel has also kept herself busy with countless hours on school committees and many charity events in her community. Rachel has been a member of the National Honor society and received various school awards and honors. She was the President of the Student Senate and her organizational & motivational skills are impeccable.

Prateek Sharma from Canton High School is a member of the National Honor society who also received numerous school awards and honors. He participated in a number of school related activities including being the captain of his Science Olympiad team for grades 10 through 12. He participated on the math Olympiad team and the Health Occupation club. Prateek also gave back to his community by volunteering at a hospital, library and a food pantry handing out food to those in need. Prateek in his essay said he gets satisfaction from changing a life. One example is he and a group of his friends started a science fair at a middle school and assisted the students with their projects. Prateek has the values the Harold DuCharme scholarship embodies.

Kate Diehl graduated from Farmington High School and was a member of the National Honor Society. Kate participated in many school and community activities including tutoring at risk students, served as a student rep for the Parent Teacher Student Association for four years and was a tri-chair of the Mayor’s Youth Council. She was also a National Merit semi-finalist. Brett was valedictorian of his graduating class, participated on the varsity swim team and founded his own company, Bohan Technologies. Among his extracurricular activities was board member of the National Honor Society, President of Math Olympiad Club as well as many community volunteer experiences. David attended Ferndale High School, where he played sports, participated in the marching band and performed at the highest level in the classroom. David was captain of the Varsity Tennis team and played Varsity Soccer. Also, David demonstrated his fine art skills participating in theater, and the marching and jazz bands. Brian Foster is a graduate of Winston Churchill High School in Livonia. Mr. Foster made contributions to his high school in and out of the classroom. His many significant and impressive academic accomplishments are not the only impact he made to his school and community. Mr. Foster welcomed the opportunity to tutor and assist other students in learning. He also served as Treasurer of the National Honor Society and volunteered with the school’s peer conflict management program. Within the community, Mr. Foster volunteered as a cook for a homeless shelter, a visitor of the elderly and youth leader of Vacation Bible School at his church.
