Jonathan Manela

North Farmington High School
Jerry & Anne Hanlon Scholarship
2024/2025
Jonathan Manela plans to enroll at the College of LSA through its Honors Program. Jonathan is graduating from North Farmington High School with a 4.0 unweighted GPA having taken a rigorous courseload consisting of many AP and honors courses. He is both an AP Scholar with Distinction and a National Merit Finalist. Jonathan has many passions, one of which is music. He is a member of the North Farmington Symphony Band, Jazz Ensemble, and Marching Band, where he served as the Field Sergeant, and he has performed in the Pit Orchestra for the school musical. Jonathan studies trombone privately, has volunteered as an instrument coach for the Farmington Public Schools Middle School Summer Music Camp, and has received a Proficiency I Division I rating as a soloist at MSBOA State Solo & Ensemble. Jonathan is also an active member of North Farmington’s Model United Nations, where he served as both Undersecretary of Internal Affairs and Deputy Secretary General and received the Book Award for best researched in committee. He enjoys being involved with his school community as a member of the National Honor Society, PTSA, class board, Student Senate Executive Board, HOSA Board, Bowling Captain, and LINK Crew leader for incoming freshmen. Away from school, Jonathan volunteers as a religious school teaching assistant and holds the positions of Vice President of Religious Engagement and Mind, Body, and Attitude Chair for his youth group. He is also actively involved with his local community, where he is a member of JARC’s Teen Action Council and has served as both the Secretary and a board member at large for the Farmington/Farmington Hills Mayors’ Youth Council.

Kay Youmans

2024/2025

Kay Youmans is Valedictorian of Taylor High School's class of 2024 and will be attending LS&A in the fall. She is a hardworking, dedicated student, well-loved and respected by her peers. During her time at Taylor High School, Kay took nine AP classes, including an independent study for Calc BC. Collegeboard's AP Scholar award speaks as a testament to Kay's hard work and dedication in her studies throughout high school. She also participated in various student-led organizations throughout her high school career, such as Academic Games Team, Quiz Bowl, Book Club, Student Council, and National Honor Society. Kay has a passion for writing, leading to her founding Taylor High School's inaugural Creative Writing Club! Her love for the environment helped her to coordinate with peers and teachers to help create a Green Club within the school as well. This speaks to her constant drive for innovation and student involvement. Kay hopes to pursue a career in the field of Eco-Psychology or Urban Planning, finding a way to help those in need while also tending to the needs of the planet.

Seth Palmer

Seth Palmer is an Oxford High School graduate and enrolled in the College of Engineering with a goal to study biomedical engineering in preparation for medical school. Seth is an AP Scholar with Distinction, and was named a National Merit Scholarship Finalist. With over a 4.1 GPA, Seth took a rigorous course curriculum that included ten AP classes. In addition to his academic schedule, he participated in HOSA- Future Health Professionals becoming a regional finalist his Junior & Senior years, was a member of his High School JV soccer team and participated in 8 years of Club soccer, was an active member of National Honors Society and was a member of the Oxford Symphony Orchestra where he was principal cellist his Junior and Senior years and was awarded multiple MSBOA top rankings both regionally and on the state level. Seth was also involved in Boy Scouts where he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with a silver palm. He stayed active in volunteering in his community, through Boy Scouts, National Honors Society, and his Church Youth Group. He participated in building bird houses for Oakland County Parks, the Flint Water Drive, Flint Clothing Drive, Midland Flood Clean-up, serving in soup kitchens, tutored through NHS and led a community project to index local cemeteries.  

Emily Feldman

Frankel Jewish Academy

2020/2021

Emily plans to enroll in the College of LS&A and is the recipient of the Frankel and Anne Hanlon Scholarship. Emily received many academic awards and finished with an overall 4.0 GPA, while taking multiple AP classes. During Emily’s first year, she received Excellence in Bible and English. Her sophomore year, she was honored with Excellence in Math and English and received the Boruch Scholarship Award. Emily’s junior year, she was honored with Excellence in Rabbinics and Science. Emily was an active member of the National Honor Society, Girls 2 Women Club and Education Revisions Team. She was a 3-time president of the Social Justice Club, editor of the yearbook her senior year and 4-time student ambassador. Emily was part of the varsity volleyball team throughout her high school career and was captain her senior year. She participated of the varsity basketball team, being captain her senior year as well. Outside of school, Emily was a member of the Kol Koleinu Teen Feminist Fellowship and Tamarack Teen Council board member. Emily volunteered with ‘Meals on Wheels’ and Yad Ezra. She also volunteered her time by being a Torah reader at Adat Shalom Synagogue.

Dennis Synder

Dennis plans to enroll in the College of Engineering and is the recipient of the Jerry and Ann Hanlon Scholarship. Dennis has taken multiple AP classes and received various awards including being National Merit Semifinalist, AP scholar with Honor and Academic Excellence Award. He was part of the Annapolis High School Jazz and Concert Band, Drama club, National Honor Society and team captain of the Quiz Bowl team his senior year. Dennis is also a member of the HFC Metropolitan Symphony Band, as well as a volunteer at Gleaners Community Food Bank and Wreaths across America.

Daniel Ramos

Western International High School

2018/2019
Daniel Ramos plans to enroll in the College of LS&A and is the recipient of the Jerry & Anne Hanlon Scholarship. Daniel is well prepared and motivated for college carrying over a 4.0 overall weighted GPA. Daniel has been an active member of both the swim and track and field team, as well as robotics and National Honor Society. Academically, he has taken advantage of the most rigorous AP classes including Physics, English Language Arts, and Spanish. Daniel has also generously given his time and energies to his community through Garza Services and Department of Neighborhoods Youth Council. 

Jasmine Zadroga

2017/2018
Jasmine Zadroga is the 2017 recipient of the Jerry & Anne Hanlon Scholarship. She is a graduate of L’Anse Creuse North High School and plans to enroll in the School of Engineering. Jasmine served as National Art Honor Society Vice President, a member of Cross Country and Track and Field, and President of Mu Alpha Theta. She was a National Honor Society Tutor, Chemistry Tutor, and Math Honor Society Tutor, along with doing Community Service involving the Arts. She has scored very well in various AP Classes including Calculus AB and Chemistry. Jasmine is well respected by her peers as well as her teachers and is known to be dependable and mature.

Desislava Dikova

Harrison High School

2016/2017

Desislava Dikova is the 2016 recipient of the Jerry & Anne Hanlon Scholarship.  She is a graduate of Harrison High School and plans to enroll in the College of LS&A.  Desislava served as National Honors Society President, Swim and Dive Team Captain and was a Varsity Track and Field member.  She was a volunteer with the Detroit Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, Project Vivace, and Hawk Help Tutoring. She has scored very well in various AP Classes and received the AP Scholar with distinction award and she was a National Merit Semifinalist as well.  Desislava is well respected by her peers as well as her teachers and is known as one of the most polite students.

Matthew Proegler

Chelsea High School

2015/2016

Matthew Proegler plans to enroll in the School of Engineering and is the recipient of the Jerry & Anne Hanlon Scholarship.  Matt has taken the most demanding Honors & AP classes because he enjoys the challenge and deeply cares about education.   He has been a member of Student Council, Science Olympiad, and National Honor Society and has earned multiple Varsity Letters in various sports.  As Captain of the Cross Country team, Matt, helped lead his team to be League & Regional Champions and 6th in the State.  In his free time he enjoys umpiring & refereeing various sports and coaching youth basketball.

Maya Eter

Crestwood High School

2014/2015

Maya Eter plans to enroll into the School of LS & A and is the recipient of the Jerry & Anne Hanlon Scholarship.  Maya finished fifth in her class while accumulating credit for 8 AP/college classes.  Maya is a member of the Student Congress at Crestwood High School while also participating in Varsity Rowing and Varsity Cross Country.  She is a member of the National Honor Society, Link Crew and BuildOn Volunteer Organization.  Maya volunteers as a coach for Dearborn Heights Soccer Club Peewee Team and assists in creating events for a community member in need of a kidney; such as blood drives, awareness dinners and kidney walks. Maya is a 4.0 honor student, and has received distinct honors as an AP Scholar, School Service Award, Leadership award and MVP in the cross country team.  Maya was a member of the 2012 Trek to Haiti team where she was chosen to volunteer and live with a host family for two weeks in Mission, Haiti.

Jordan D. Berman

North Farmington High School

2013/2014
Jordan graduated at the top of his class at North Farmington High School.  His diverse studies focused on both math and science including honors classes in physics, engineering and chemistry; AP courses in physics, calculus and psychology were a part of his overall 4.0 GPA.  Jordan excelled in track and soccer during high school and also participated in the National Honor Society and Student Government.  Strong family values inspire Jordan and fuel his goal to succeed at the University of Michigan.  At UM he intends to major in Biology, participate in Club Soccer and in the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program UROP.  Long term goals include studying medicine, with a primary focus in Neurology, to obtain his primary goal of becoming a practicing Neurologist.

Curtis Herzog

Novi High School

2012/2013
Curtis Herzog graduated from Novi High School. While in high school he was an AP Scholar and maintained a 4.0 GPA. He was Assistant Captain and All-State First Team for the Varsity hockey team, where he played three years and won a State Championship in 2011. He also played Varsity lacrosse for three years and was Captain as a senior. Curtis volunteered at St. Mary Mercy Hospital and is a National Federation Gold Cup pianist.
