Dominic Apap

Detroit Catholic Central High School

2024/2025
Dominic Apap is a graduate of Detroit Catholic Central High School and will be attending the University of Michigan’s College of Literature, Science, and the Arts on a pre-med track. In high school, he earned a 4.887 GPA and took nine AP classes. He participates in quiz bowl, band, Boy Scouts, Spanish Honor Society, and is co-editor-in-chief of the Spectrum newspaper. He has served as the Vice President of Catholic Central’s Linking Hearts mentorship program, which guides middle schoolers in Dearborn. He also volunteers as a public address announcer for St. Edith basketball games, and you can find him caddying at Meadowbrook Country Club during the summer.

Matthew Rai

North Farmington High School

2024/2025
Matthew is a recipient of the 2024-2025 Roger and Elaine Zatkoff Scholarship. He currently attends North Farmington High School and has been accepted into the College of Engineering for the fall of 2024. Over the past four years, Matthew has been involved in numerous school activities, clubs, and sports. He competed as a varsity cross country and track athlete for all four years, earning All-League cross country honors for two consecutive seasons. In addition, he compiled more than 60 volunteer hours between 11th and 12th grade as a member of the National Honor Society. He was also heavily involved in his school’s Model United Nations Club, LINK Crew, Student Senate Executive Board, Class Board, and Recycling Club. Matthew has a deep passion for the arts; he served as the principal cellist of his school’s symphony orchestra for multiple years, earned nine top ratings at the MSBOA Solo and Ensemble Festival, and took private lessons for more than seven years. Matthew currently holds a 4.3095 GPA and has managed to earn all A’s throughout high school despite partaking in a rigorous course load with 11 AP courses. Recently, he was named a National Merit Scholarship Finalist as well. Matthew cannot wait to get on campus in the fall and experience all that the University of Michigan has to offer, especially relating to his engineering studies. 

Gabby Stempien

My name is Gabby Stempien and I am currently a senior graduating from Orchard Lake St. Mary’s. During my time there, I participated in many sports and clubs. I was the ski race team captain, swim team captain, and played golf and tennis as well. I was a part of NHS, a business leadership club, and spent a lot of time volunteering. Over the four years, I took many rigorous courses and always maintained above a 4. GPA. In the fall, I will be studying economics at the University of Michigan—Ann Arbor and plan to minor in marketing. 

Jazelle Yaldo

Notre Dame Prep High School

2024/2025
Jazzelle, a recipient of the Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship, is a Valedictorian of Notre Dame Preparatory School’s class of 2024 and will be attending the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. Jazzelle graduated with an unweighted 4.0 GPA and was a participant in 10 rigorous AP courses. Due to this course load, she was awarded the Summa Cum Laude as well as the AP Scholar Award and American Citizenship Award. She was an active leader throughout high school as the President of the Be Nice Mental Health Club and the President/Founder of the Pre-Medical Club. She also served in her school as a Student Ambassador, member of the National Honors Society, and Peer Mentor. Jazzelle is CPR and AED certified as she worked as a Head Lifeguard and Swim Instructor for four years. Additionally, she worked as an office assistant at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital for two years. Jazzelle engaged in two research projects, one on cholecystectomies and ERCPs and the other on Bulimia Nervosa’s effect on the epidermis, and she volunteered weekly at the Friendship Circle of Michigan. She also plays the piano, competing in various competitions including the Michigan Music Festival. Jazzelle participated in upwards of ten years of competitive swimming in the Suburban Inter-Club Swim Association as well as was a three times Varsity starting power forward of the Notre Dame Preparatory basketball team. She was Varsity Team Captain and won various awards including the Scholar Athlete Award, MVP Award, and Player of the Game. Jazzelle plans to major in biochemistry and pursue a career in healthcare.

Sanya Ahmed

Canton High School

Sanya is a graduate of Canton High School. She will be enrolling in the College of Engineering at UofM. She earned a 4.35 gpa, taking several AP courses including US History, Chemistry, Physics, Calc BC, and Psychology. She also participated in three varsity sports: Track, Gymnastics, and Cross Country, of which she was the captain. Additionally, she was involved in various extracurriculars at her school including National Honors Society, Science Olympiad, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, HOSA, and Muslim Student Association.

Lidia Cappelletti is the Valedictorian of Allen Park High School’s class of 2023 and will be attending the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. While in high school she has taken 13 AP Classes and 10 dual enrollments (9 at the University of Michigan Dearborn). She has also served as the Executive Board President of Student Council, President of the National Honor Society, President of Students Against Destructive Decisions, Captain of Mock Trial, Captain of Girls Varsity Soccer, Captain of We the People, Link Crew Commissioner, Student Vice President of the Parent Teacher Student Association, Delegate of Model United Nations, Interact Club Member, Drama Club & Tech Crew Member, Christian Club Member, Women of Tomorrow Participant, APAW Member, Book Club Member, Literary Magazine Editor, Schoolhouse World SAT Onboarding Lead, Taekwondo 3rd Degree Black Belt and Instructor. Lidia has received several awards including, the National Merit Scholarship, State Star Attorney, Outstanding Delegate, AP Scholar with Distinction, Coca-Cola Scholarship, All League Academic, and the News Herald’s Second Team. Lidia has also written a poetry book, Sparks & Ashes, and a novel, Half the Truth.

Kyle Kirch

Eisenhower High School

Kyle Kirsch has a passion for running and is a member of both the Eisenhower High School Cross Country and Track Teams.  He is also the Vice President of the German Club and a member of both the National Honor Society and the Environmental Club.  Kyle took many AP Courses including World History, United States History, United States Government, Calculus BC, Chemistry, English Literature and Composition, German, and Statistics.  He will graduate with a 4.10 GPA, holds a score of 1480 on the SAT, 32 on the ACT, and is a member of the Macomb All-Academic Team.  Kyle also volunteers with the Humane Society of Macomb.  In his free time, Kyle plays the guitar and enjoys mountain biking.  Kyle owns and operates Kirsch’s Lawn Service.  He has also worked at Mr. C’s Car Wash, Art and Jakes Restaurant, and is currently employed at Team Rehab Physical Therapy as a Physical Therapy Technician. Kyle is an AAPPL German Proficient Speaker and a recipient of several Academic Honors and Awards. 


Robert Silaghi

2023/2024
Robert attended an international baccalaureate program in high school, where he excelled academically and gained a love for learning. Robert's passion for business and finance grew as he took courses in economics. He will now be attending the University of Michigan Ross School of Business, where he plans to pursue a Bachelor of Business Administration. In addition to his academics, Robert was also heavily involved in extracurricular activities. He created Project-STEM, a non-profit organization that provided tutoring services to underprivileged students in his community. Through his leadership, the organization grew and impacted the lives of thousands of students. Robert also had a keen interest in investing and led many investment initiatives. Among other things, he was the co-president of the Investing Club, where he gained valuable experience in analyzing and managing investment portfolios.

My name is Molly McMillan. I graduated from Saint Mary Catholic Central in Monroe, MI with a 4.18 GPA. I am entering the new Sports Management Immersion program at the University of Michigan. I will be majoring in sports management and marketing to pursue a career of sports broadcasting. I have five older siblings who are all very special to me. I participate in the girls’ varsity soccer team and won a state championship with my travel team. I am an interact officer, peer mentor, Geek Squad officer, NHS officer, and SPLT officer. I am the vice president of a club called iMatter. I am also a member of Student Council, Respect Life, and the student ambassador team.

Sana Nimmagadda

Saran Nimmagadda, a recipient of the Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship, graduated as Valedictorian of her graduating class. Saran graduated with an unweighted 4.0 GPA and was a participant in many rigorous AP courses such as United States History, Chemistry, Calculus AB, English Language and Composition, Biology, English Literature and Composition, Calculus BC and Physics 1. She was also the secretary for her school’s National Honors Society Chapter as well as for her HOSA- Future Health Professionals team. Due to this rigorous course load, she was awarded the Summa Cum Laude as well as the AP Scholar with Honor Award. She was also named a National Merit Semi-finalist and was then selected as a National Merit Finalist. Saran volunteered weekly at a local hospice, Red Cross,Meals on Wheels , Focus: Hope,  and would spend every Wednesday tutoring young girls in the Detroit Public School System in Calculus and Algebra through the Mercy Education Project. Saran also works as a volunteer at a Head and Neck Cancer Research Lab at the University of Michigan, where she assists in procuring and testing drug treatment for squamous cancer cells. She will be enrolling as a student in the Honors Literature Science and the Arts program in the fall. 


Maria VanDiern

Notre Dame Prep High School

2022/2023

Maria plans to enroll in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and is a recipient of the Roger and Elaine Zatkoff Scholarship. She played varsity softball and the flute, piccolo, and piano in the marching, symphonic, jazz, and pit orchestra bands while earning numerous first division ratings as a musician.  She was an active leader throughout high school as President of the Optimist Club and Vice President of the Champions for Life Club to serve the marginalized and those less fortunate in the community.  She also served as a Student Ambassador for her school and as a band Section Leader in mentoring other musicians.  Maria was selected to join the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society.  She was also recognized for All Academic Catholic League honors each year as well as a National Merit Finalist, a National Spanish Exam medalist, and an AP Scholar with Distinction.  She completed eleven AP courses and graduated at the top of her high school class.  Outside of school, Maria tutors, dances with a local studio, and volunteers at her church.  She has worked as an office assistant in a surgeon’s office and as an activities aide at an assisted living facility.  Maria plans to pursue a career in healthcare. 

 

Dania Ali

Saline High School

2021/2022
Dania plans to enroll in the College of Literature, Science, and Arts and is a recipient of a Club of Greater Detroit Scholarship. Dania was a member of many extracurricular activities such as vice president of the National Honors Society, treasurer of her school's Student Council, president of Students Against Destructive Desicions, and participated in Link Crew which is a school organization that helps mentor incoming high school freshman. Dania also had an extensive list of AP and advanced courses which consisted of language and composition, chemistry, government, biology, statistics, psychology, and advanced architectural CAD. While managing these classes and in-school activities, Dania balanced two jobs which consisted of dealing with handicapped medical patients and handling leasing agreements with college students and also volunteered at her local Red Cross association. She is also a very active student who has played soccer throughout her academic career and began participating in Crossfit training around three years ago. Dania has earned regional, divisional, and state-wide awards for her CAD skills and recognitions for her academic achievements throughout her high school career. 

Hemil Shah

Farmington High School

Hemil Shah is graduating from Farmington High School and has a 4.0 Unweighted GPA. Academically, he has taken over a dozen AP classes and 2 dual enrollment courses during high school. Outside of school, he was a member of several clubs, played Varsity Tennis for 4 years, volunteered as a tutor, participated on a competitive dance team, and was a summer research intern at the UM Rogel Cancer Center. Some of the leadership roles Hemil took on included being Captain of his school's Science Bowl team which he cofounded, DECA Vice President, Science Olympiad Co-Captain, Varsity Tennis Co-Captain and Founder of his school's Biology Olympiad. Hemil enjoys trivia very much and his team qualified for Nationals in Quiz Bowl and placed 2nd in the state of Michigan in Science Bowl. Some of his awards include: USA Biology Olympiad Semifinalist, FPS Superintendent's Award, Michigan Math Prize Round 2 Qualifier, DECA State Finalist and ICDC qualifier, and National Merit Commended. Lastly, in his free time, Hemil enjoys playing soccer and basketball, reading fiction, and mountain biking

Kaitlin Showalter

Walled Lake Northern

2021/2022
Kaitlin plans to enroll in the College of Literature, Science and Arts and is a recipient of the Roger and Elaine Zatkoff Scholarship. She has played Varsity Soccer and Volleyball at WL Northern, earning All-Conference Honors in volleyball, and is a Lakes Valley Conference Scholar Athlete. She was inducted into the National Honor Society and the National German Honor Society in 2019. Kaitlin is Class Council Treasurer her senior year and was a class representative all four years of high school. She is a U.S. Soccer certified referee since 2018 and works part-time in this role. She has been a member of the CW3 Jaguars soccer club since the age of 5 years old and has played several years of national level club volleyball as well. Kaitlin takes a rigorous course curriculum, with 6 AP classes as a senior and a 4.3 GPA. She will have completed 11 AP classes and will graduate with an AP Capstone Diploma designation. She earned the AP Scholar with Distinction Award in 2020. Kaitlin participated in the WLN German Exchange Program in 2018-2019. She has studied Mandarin Chinese outside of school since kindergarten and intends to major in Microbiology with a minor in German Studies and/or Asian Languages and Cultures. Kaitlin plans to participate in Club Soccer or possibly Club Volleyball and in the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) as well.

Emily Song

Emily plans to enroll in the College of Engineering (and is the recipient of the Gary & Ann Moeller Scholarship). Emily participated in varsity swimming & tennis in high school and earned scholar-athlete honors in both sports. She also has played soccer at the Canton Soccer Club for 10 years and has served as an official soccer referee for 5 years. She is ranked number one academically in graduating class, participated in four years of the district's STEM academy, and earned AP Scholar with Distinction, and was selected to the National Honor Society. She has played piano for 10 years and Saxophone for 4 years, earned the highest level piano rating in Michigan Music Teachers Association student achievement testing. She has performed various dance styles over 12 years including in her studio's competition team, served as team choreographer for her school's K-Pop dance team, and served as an active board member for her school's Korean Culture Club. She participated in Asian Pacific American Club and served as the Association of Chinese Americans summer camp counselor. She teaches and tutors in Math and English, and instructed students in Wuhan, China, during the start of COVID-19.

Sophia Tesic plans to enroll in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts and is the recipient of the Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship. Sophia’s rigorous academic schedule included numerous AP and honors courses. She earned the status of National Merit Finalist and was a Salutatorian for her graduating class. Sophia was a state officer for the Michigan Junior Classical League and also a 4x gold medal/summa cum laude recipient from the National Latin Exam. While a student at Mercy High School, Sophia was the leader of CyberPatriot, a co-leader of the Genes in Diseases and Symptoms Club, a 3x HOSA state competition qualifier, a Division I violin soloist at Solo & Ensemble, a National Honor Society member, and part of the tennis and quiz bowl teams. Outside of school, Sophia was a member of the miRcore Volunteer Program, where she served as a group leader for the computational biology camp. Sophia also volunteered locally as a math tutor and Science Olympiad coach.

Christian Henderson

Christian plans to enroll in the College of Engineering and is the recipient of the Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship. Christian graduated with an unweighted 4.0 GPA while taking a rigorous course curriculum, which included AP classes in Human Geography, U.S. Government, Environmental Science, Chemistry, U.S. History, Calculus, Physics and English Literature. Christian received the Chemistry Award and placed 3rd in the East Tennessee Regional Science Olympiad his sophomore year. He was an active member of the solar go-kart team, robotics, and science and physics clubs. Outside of academics, Christian was a member of the cross-country, swim, track and field teams. He earned most improved swimmer his freshman year and coaches award his junior year. In his spare time, Christian was a part of the Boys Scouts America; patrol leader of BSA and order of the arrow BSA Honor Society. He also was a swim instructor and camp counselor.

Sophia Papadopoulos

Sophia plans to enroll in the College of LS&A and is the recipient of the Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship. Sophia took multiple AP classes and was president Huron Business Professionals of America all four years of her high school career. She was also a member of DECA, Huron Rotary Interact and National Honor Society. Outside of school, Sophia was co-chair of the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation Youth Council, market research intern, dance teacher at Inner Action Dance Studio and team co-captain of the Ci Wa Wa Chinese Cultural Competitive Dance Team. Throughout her high school career, Sophia earned multiple honors and awards, which include 1st place Business Professionals America website design team, 1st place Business Professionals of America Financial Analysis Team, 1st place Tao Li Chinese Cultural Dance Competition, 2nd place DECA marketing management team, and 2nd place DECA Principles of Marketing and 3rd place Business Professionals America Human Resource Management.

Harry Yang

Rochester Adams High School

2020/2021

Harry plans to enroll in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts and is the recipient of the Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship. Harry had a demanding academic schedule, which included AP Chinese, Calculus, U.S. History, Statistics, Chemistry, U.S. Government, English Literature, Computer Science, Physics, Biology and Spanish Language. Harry was part of the Chemistry club, Link Crew, National Honor Society, HOSA, Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, and Science Olympiad. He was a captain of the Science Olympiad his sophomore, junior and senior year. As a pianist and flutist, Harry was a member of the Oakland Youth Orchestra and a band mentor.  In his spare time, Harry would volunteer at the Ascension Providence Rochester Hospital. Throughout his high school years, Harry placed first in Pharmacology knowledge HOSA event and Protein Modeling for the Science Olympiad. He earned Honorable Mention for the Chemistry Olympiad, top scorer for Michigan in the National Spanish Exam, 99th percentile nationwide for the National Spanish Exam, National Merit Semifinalist, NSLI-Y semifinalist and musical achievements.

Miranda Makowski

Riverview Community High School

2019/2020

Miranda plans to enroll in the College of Engineering and is the recipient of the Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship. Miranda finished first in her class with a weighted GPA over a 4.0 overall. Miranda was a member of many school related clubs, including Spanish, diversity, connection and pirate pals. She also earned varsity letters in swimming, diving and soccer. Miranda took a rigorous academic schedule with multiple AP classes, including microeconomics, macroeconomics, calculus, statistics and U.S. History. Miranda was part of the National Honor Society and earned Michigan State University HATS OFF award, for being in the top 1% of students in Michigan. Miranda was the recipient of the Women in Engineering Summer Camp Scholarship her junior year. She volunteered at Susan G. Komen “Race for the Cure” and as a member of the pirate pals, Miranda mentored elementary students with autism and special needs.

Justin Tocco

Plymouth High School

2019/2020

Justin plans to enroll in College of Engineering and is the recipient of the Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship. Justin finished first in his class with a weighted GPA of 4.21. Justin had a rigorous academic curriculum, including AP classes in calculus, computer science, macroeconomics, microeconomics, physics, statistics and Spanish. He was dual enrolled at Eastern Michigan in programming data structures courses. Justin was a board member –PCCS computer advisory board, ski club and Canton Education Basketball League. He was part of the varsity baseball, where he earned All-State and All-District Academic Honors and KLAA Varsity Scholar Athlete. Justin was part of the University of Michigan Dearborn STEM Mentorship, ECE Electrify Program and iD Tech Summer Camp. He was also part of the Visteon STEM mentorship and travel baseball. Justin volunteered as an assistant coach special Olympics of Michigan, academic tutor and Plymouth High School Key club.

Cameron Tressler

Saline High School

2019/2020

Cameron plans to enroll in the College of Engineering and is the recipient of the Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship. Cameron finished first in his class with an unweighted GPA of 4.0. Cameron enrolled in multiple AP classes, which included Chemistry, computer science, calculus, English Composition, U.S. Government, music theory, physics, statistics, macroeconomics and microeconomics. Cameron was part of the FRC5066 Coding Team, which brought STEM to the community outreach, and invited to the Legion of Mathematics Scholars competition. As a pianist and saxophonists, Cameron was a member of the marching band, as a section and squad leader and member of the jazz band and pit orchestra. Athletically, Cameron was a part of the varsity tennis team all four years. He was captain and Hornet of the year, his senior year. He was part of track and field, mostly distance racing in the spring of his senior year. Cameron was invited to the National Student Leadership Conference at the Northwestern Engineering School. He was also invited to the Michigan Math and Science Scholars. In Cameron’s spare time, he tutored younger students in pre-calculus and volunteered at Brecon Village Evangelical Home. Throughout his high schools years, Cameron was a National Merit semifinalist, qualified to take the U.S. Olympiad Chemistry Exam, 5-time Michigan Mathematics Prize Competition finalist, earned the English Department Award and Gold Honor Roll.

Melissa Beyrand

2018/2019
Melissa Beyrand is a recipient of the Elaine & Roger Zatkoff Scholarship and is planning to enroll in the School of Engineering. As a student at Detroit Country Day, Melissa was active in numerous extracurricular activities including serving as Co-Caption, junior year, and Captain, senior year, on the Varsity Dance team, participating in school musical productions, and serving as captain of the Forensics team her senior year. She took many AP classes such a Chemistry, Calculus AB, Physics 1 and 2, and French V. With her academic rigor, Melissa managed to earn the Girl Scouts Silver Award, earn the honor of a Universal Dance Association All-American three years in a row, and receiving the honor a National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist. Melissa also participated in community service at St. Aidan’s Catholic Church, Summer in the City, and St. Christine Soup Kitchen.

Grace Ma, one of the winners of the Elaine & Roger Zatkoff Scholarship graduated from Salem High School with a 4.32 GPA and she plans to enroll in the School of Engineering. She has completed many AP and Honors courses including Calculus BC, Chemistry, and English Language and Composition. She earned many honors and awards such as the Scholastic Art and Writing Award Gold Key, a National Merit Semifinalist, and a National AP Scholar. Grace served as project coordinator of Link Crew, a member of National Honors Society, and a member of Vision Mentorship Program. She also volunteered at Summit on the Park, STEM days at elementary schools, and Dancin’ Feet as a teacher’s assistant.

Krupa Patel plans to enroll in the College of LS&A and is a recipient of the Elaine & Roger Zatkoff Scholarship. Krupa has been active in school activities including Student Council President, Key Club President, National Honor Society President, and Co-Captain of Girls’ Varsity Volleyball. She has taken the most demanding AP classes such as World History, Biology, Calculus AB and BC, and Chemistry. Krupa has also been a volunteer at Open Door Ministry Food Back, Canton Public Library, and kids Against Hunger 5K. Her senior year she earned the AP Scholar Award and the Summa Cum Laude Award.

Melanie Taylor

Melanie Taylor graduate from Ernest W. Seaholm High School in Bimingaham, MI and is one of this year’s recipients of the Elaine & Roger Zatkoff Scholarship. Her senior year she was the Captain of the Varsity Maple Motion Dance Team and served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Seaholm Highlander, the student newspaper. She was also a member of Seaholm Girls Speak Up, Spanish Honors Society, Dance Academy of Bloomfield Hills Senior Company. Throughout her four years of high school she earned many awards including Seaholm High School Varsity Scholar Athlete, Seaholm Highlander Student Newspaper Publisher’s Award, and the presidential Service Award. Tyler is one of the 2017 recipients of the Elaine & Roger Zatkoff Scholarship. He is a graduate of Walled Lake Northern High School and plans to enroll in the College of LS&A. Tyler has taken multiple AP classes and received various awards including being a 2016 AP Scholar with Honor, Kensington Lakes Activities Association Scholar Athlete, and he qualified for the National Merit Scholarship Program. He served as a caption for the Varsity Golf Team and Varsity Tennis Team along with serving a Head of Membership Committee for the Walled Lake Northern Business Club. Tyler also volunteered with High School Youth Group at Grace Community Church, “Outrun Hunger” 5K Race, and tutored in math.

Maria LoCicero is one of the winners of the Elaine & Roger Zatkoff Scholarship. She graduated from Greenhills School and plans to enroll in the College of LS&A. She has completed multiple AP and Honors courses including US History, English Language, and Latin. She earned a silver medal in the National Latin Exam, a gold medal in the National French Exam, and the Greenhills Scholar Award. Maria served as team captain of the Forensics team her senior year, Vice President of the Senior Class, and a member of the Varsity Softball Team. She was also an active member of her community by singing for elderly residents at Glazier Hills, tutoring 4th graders in Detroit, and volunteering with Bligh Busters in Detroit.

Kelsey Postler, one the winners of the Elaine & Roger Zatkoff Scholarship graduated from Canton High School with a 4.124 GPA and she plans to enroll in the College of LS&A. She has completed many AP and Honors cours-es including Psychology, US History, Biology, and Macroeconomics. She earned many Honors & Awards such as AP Scholar with Distinction, NCAA Scholar Athlete, and Honor Roll. Kelsey served as a HOSA class representative, a member of both Varsity Cross Country and Varsity Track and Field, and a coordinator of American Red Cross Blood Drive. She has also volunteered at Habitat for Humanity Mission Trip to Marquette Michigan, Bentley Elementary Tutoring, and St. Pat’s Soup Kitchens.

Jessica is planning to enroll in the College of LS&A and is one of the recipients of the Elaine & Roger Zatkoff Scholarship. She has taken various AP classes and received numerous awards. Jessica was a lab assistant at U-M Neurodevelopment & Regeneration Lab, Secretary of GIDAS Club, and a leader of Huron Symphony Band. Jessica balances her academics with many hours of extra-curricular activities & community related events including volunteering at Ann-Hua Chinese School, Glacier Hills Senior Living Community, and YVC Expanding Horizons Summer Program. She is described as an extremely mature, bright and gifted student with great potential a strong work ethic.

Marissa Martinelli

Marissa is one of the 2016 recipients of the Elaine & Roger Zatkoff Scholarship.  She is a graduate of Grosse Ile High School and plans to enroll in the School of Engineering.  Marissa has taken multiple AP classes and received various awards including the Madame Curie Award which is given to an outstanding junior female who show exemplary ability in mathematics and science classes.  She has been active in Varsity Competitive Cheer, Varsity Sideline Cheer, the Marching Band, and Varsity Track & Field. Marissa has a huge heart and volunteers at SharEd, a non-profit organization that provides education for children in Afghanistan and she was Co-Chair Run for the Unborn in the Sacred Heart Youth Group, a fundraiser for a crisis pregnancy center. Marissa also went on a mission trip to Ecuador with the Archdiocese of Detroit and helped in villages while communicating with Ecuadorians in Spanish.

Andrew is planning to enroll in the College of LS&A and is a recipient of the Elaine & Roger Zatkoff Scholarship.  He has taken various AP classes and received numerous awards both academically and athletically. Andrew was a four-year starter and co-captain of the Varsity Boys Soccer Team where he led his team to a state championship in 2014. Andrew balances his academics with many hours of extra-curricular activities & community related events including volunteering at NoBLE anti-bullying clinic, volunteering as a tutor for middle school student struggling in Math, and participating in a service trip to build houses in New Orleans. Andrew is described a role model among his peers with his humble, kind, and helpful personality.

Neil Shah

Neil Shah, one the winners of the Elaine & Roger Zatkoff Scholarship graduated from Troy High School with a 4.2733 GPA and he plans to enroll in the College of LS&A.  He has completed many AP and Honors courses including Calculus BC, Chemistry, Biology, and Macroeconomics. He earned many Honors & Awards such as USA Biology Olympiad Semifinalist and 1st place in the HOSA Biotechnology Event at State Completion. Neil makes academics his priority and focus but has contributed to several clubs with leadership roles like Co-President of Clubmed, President of Chess Club, and Treasurer of Chemistry Club. He has also volunteered at Friends of the Troy Public Library and St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital.

Eliza Laramee is a Berkley High School graduate and has enrolled in the College of LS&A.  She is the recipient of one of the Elaine & Roger Zatkoff Scholarships.  Eliza has been a Captain on BHS Soccer, Basketball & Volleyball for 4 years and has been a member of the National Honor Society, Student Leadership and SADD.  She volunteers with Summer in the City and BHS Volleyball Camp & BHS Blood Drive.  Eliza has taken a varied, extremely accelerated series of courses and has received multiple Academic & Athletic Honors & Awards.

Tazia Miah has been selected as an Elaine & Roger Zatkoff Scholarship winner and plans to register in the College of LS&A.  At Hamtramck High she has been involved in Student Government, Symphonic & Marching Bands, the Science Olympiad and Varsity Tennis.  She has also been a volunteer with Wayne Metro Community Action Agency, United Way & GM Summer Internship as well as tutoring and mentoring with student council.  Tazia has been nominated & received numerous awards and plans to pursue a Degree in Biomedical or Neuroscience.  She is a formidable woman in a tiny vessel and her hard work & dedication will take her far in life.

William Schwartz is one of the 2015 recipients of the Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship.  He is a graduate of Wylie E Groves High School.  He is going to attend the University of Michigan’s College of LS&A.  Will served as National Honors Society President, Soccer Team Captain and was a Varsity Swimmer.  He was a volunteer with the Franklin Labor Day Roundup & Franklin Baseball League Umpire.  He has scored very well in various AP Classes and received the AP Scholar with distinction award in 2014.  Will is well respected by his peers as well as his teachers and has a great aptitude & eagerness to learn.

Arin Amin

Arin finished first in his class of an enrollment of 474 and enrolled in the College of LS & A.  Arin is a National Merit Semifinalist.  He is a member of the National Honor Society, a member of the Varsity Tennis and Ski team, President of the Spanish Club and Co-Captain of the school’s Quiz Bowl team.  He has earned the KLAA Gold Award for Chemistry and the KLAA Silver Award for Physics.  Arin volunteers for the local hospital, worked the school’s Red Cross Blood Drive and tutors students in the after school program. 

Jason Bittker

Jason completed high school with a 4.0 unweighted GPA and is enrolled in the College of LS&A. He was active in Groves Student Congress serving as sophomore class co-President, junior class Treasurer, and senior student body co-President. He is a member of National Honors Society. Jason played three years of varsity hockey and two years of varsity baseball. He earned numerous athletic awards including academic all-state honors during his senior hockey and baseball season. Jason received the Tom Carson award, presented at graduation to one male and female student for best personifying the qualities and behavior taught by the late Mr. Carson.  He is described by his teachers as a problem solver who enjoys a challenge. Jason is an active volunteer for the Matthew Bittker Foundation, established in memory of his brother. The Foundation has raised over $400,000 for pediatric cancer research. He was a four year participant in the LINKS program where he helped students with special needs. Jason is excited to get involved at the University of Michigan.

Abigail Collingwood is a 2013 recipient of the Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship.  She was outstanding student at Salem High School in Canton, MI and graduated number one in her class.  She is a member of the National Honor Society, active in her school and community.  She was a member of the tennis team for 4 years and was captain her senior year.  She was also a 4-year member of the school’s swim team.  During the summers, she has coached younger children with the local swim club.  She has been very active in the Girl Scouts and has received their highest award, the Girl Scout Gold Award, for design and creation of a self-sustainable rooftop ecosystem for a corporate building.  She hopes to attend law school after her graduation from the University of Michigan.

Angela E. Huang one of this year’s recipients of the Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship. Ms. Huang is an outstanding student who has participated and excelled in all dimensions of Novi High School life.

She has maintained close to a 4.0 grade point average, is a member of the National Honor Society, and appears to have a permanent spot on the Novi High School Honor Roll. Ms. Huang also found time to play varsity tennis, participate in the Novi Youth Council, tutor other students in the Chinese and English languages, volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and serve on the Yearbook Staff, to mention just a few of her many extracurricular activities. She excelled as the President of DECA (formally known as ”Distributive Education Clubs of America”), a prestigious national student organization. Under her leadership the Novi club won the DECA statewide competition and finished in the Top 10 of DECA’s 2011 International Competition.

All of this, and she also maintains a part time job at a local restaurant. Ms. Huang is truly an outstanding freshman applicant and we are honored to award her this great scholarship on behalf of Elaine and Roger Zatkoff and the University Of Michigan Club Of Greater Detroit.

Peter Romero is a 2013 recipient of the Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship.  He graduated from Farmington Harrison High School with a perfect grade point average.  He is a National Merit Finalist and received many academic awards while in high school.  He was a member of the high school band as a trombone player and served as a field commander.  He was also a 4-year member of the swim team and served as it’s captain his senior year.  Peter has been very active in the Boy Scouts of America and is an Eagle Scout.  During high school, he has worked as a lifeguard.  He is going to study Engineering while at the University of Michigan.

Emily Southern graduated from Canton High School. She ran varsity cross country all four years of high school and was a captain of the team during her Senior year. She was a member of National Honor Society during her Junior and Senior year, and took Advanced Placement classes while maintaining straight As. Emily was awarded the Science Honor Key for her class. She was recognized by Phi Beta Kappa for academic achievement, was on the Principal's Honor Roll, and received the President's Education Award.

Mackenzie Biggert is the recipient of one of two scholarships in honor of Roger and Elaine Zatkoff. He is a graduate of DeLa Salle Collegiate High School in Harrison Township. In high school, Mackenzie excelled in the classroom and in sport. He was an AP Scholar, President’s List, National Merit Commended Student and winner of several science and language awards. Also, of note, Mackenzie was captain of his Varsity Swimming Team, participated in Boy Scouts of America, and several school business and language clubs. He also displays a demonstrated work record during his high school years while also volunteering in the community.

Victor Chen is a recipient of one of the Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarships. Victor graduated from Detroit Country Day High School with a sterling academic record. He participated in Quiz Bowl, Science Olympiad and the Varsity Soccer Team. He volunteered at Karmanos Cancer Institute, Penrickton Center for Blind Children, and Hand by Hand Education Foundation. Victor also served as a research volunteer during the summers at Wayne State University’s Department of Pathology. He is also an outstanding pianist.

Katie Mullins is the recipient of the other President’s Scholarship award. Katie is a graduate of Lakeview High School, where she participated as Vice President of the National Honor Society. Katie also tutored middle school students and worked as a manager at Cold Cow Ice Cream. In addition, Katie’s scholastic record is nothing short of stellar, as she was inducted into the Math, Spanish and English Honor Societies, while taking AP Chemistry, History and Calculus.

Jeanne Kochkodan is the other recipient of the Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship. She attended Detroit Country Day High School. Jeanne participated in Varsity volleyball and was team captain, Board Member of the Community Service Club, participated in the Big Sister Program and Character Education Committee. She also participated in the community, volunteering for Meals on Wheels, the Emmanuel Community Farm, Oakwood Heritage Hospital and Remote Area Medical. She was Academic Individual All-State in Volleyball. She also won a first place award for The Detroit News Excellence in Essay Writing.

Hayley Goldenthal is the recipient of the other Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship. Hayley attended Andover High school, where she graduated with high honors taking primarily AP classes. During high school, Hayley participated in the following: French Club, History Club, National Honor Society, Marching band, Concert Band, Symphony Band, Quiz Bowl and Junior Varisy Tennis and Softball. Rather incredibly, she already had two (2) design patents (one filed and one pending). Hayley won several awards and accolades, including the Harvard Book Award in 2008. Further, Hayley held a research position at the University of Michigan Biomedical Science research Building.

Jessica is a graduate of Chippewa Valley High School where she earned a most impressive academic record. During high school, Jessica was an active member of the Be the Change Team, the Key Club, and served as National Honor Society President and Forensics Team Vice President. In addition, Jessica won student awards for math, science and overall academic excellence. She tutored other students and volunteered at Henry Ford Hospital and Clintonaire Nursing Home.

Michael Stewart

Michael Stewart is a recipient of one of two Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarships. Michael is a graduate of Brother Rice High School where he ranked first in his class. Michael participated in the Robotics team, National Honor Society, Ski Club and Marian Rice Players Lighting Crew. Outside of Brother Rice, Michael participated in the Boy Scouts of America and earned the title Eagle Scout in his senior year. As a freshman in high school, Michael earned the Scholastic All Catholic Bronze Medal and the Neema Bastanfar Memorial Scholarship. As a junior, Michael earned the David Peck Memorial Scholarship. In his senior year, Michael was awarded the National Merit Commended Student and was again awarded the Scholastic All Catholic Gold Medal. In addition to his academic and extracurricular pursuits, Michael worked at the Bloomfield Township Public Library, Huron pool and tutored students.

Benjamin Topping is the recipient of the other Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship. Benjamin attended Trenton High School, where he graduated first in his class. Benjamin participated in Mega Conference Quiz Bowl and served as Captain for three years, MI Mathematics League, Japanese Culture Club, National Honor Society, Interact Club, Spanish Club, tennis, marching band, school theatre and Ring of Steel sword fighting. Benjamin also devoted his time to an engineering internship, class treasurer, staff writer for his school paper and involved himself in coursework at the college level. Outside of school, Benjamin participated in Boy Scouts of America, volunteered for the Michigan Opera Theatre Association and was a soloist in the University of Michigan Youth Ensemble-Chamber Singers. Benjamin has received numerous awards to include National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist, National Eagle Scout Award, National Music Directors Award and numerous awards for his accomplishments in math, science and research. Benjamin received recognition in the Heritage Newspaper highlighting his summer research at MIT.

Michael Billau

Michael Billau is the other recipient of this year’s Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship. Michael compiled a sterling record at Milan High School, where he excelled as a student-athlete. Michael was a two year captain of his varsity soccer team. He also graduated second in his class taking several AP classes. Michael also served as Vice President of Student Council, participated in the Marching Band and Jazz Band, and was a member of the National Honor Society. In the community, Michael was a youth soccer coach and participated in church youth groups. He will be an outstanding addition to the University of Michigan and we look forward to his future accomplishments.

Caitlyn Kochanski

Roger and Elaine Zatkoff Scholarship
2007/2008
Caitlyn Kochanski is one of two recipients of the 2007 Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship. Caitlyn graduated with high honors taking several AP classes. She participated in the National Honor Society, served as Student Government Secretary, served on event planning committees, tutored students, and acted as a peer mediator. Amongst the awards and honors she received in high school, Caitlyn won the Rising Star Volunteer Award and the Scholar Athlete Award. Caitlyn’s desire to help others coupled with her enjoyment of science motivates her to pursue a career in nursing. Undoubtedly, we are pleased to be amongst those who applaud and recognize Caitlyn’s many accomplishments.

Melissa Helberg

Roger and Elaine Zatkoff Scholarship
2006/2007
Melissa Helberg is one of two recipients of the Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship. Melissa will be studying Biology at the University of Michigan and plans to participate in a work study program. In high school, Melissa participated in the National Honor Society, served as Senior Class President, was a member of the prom committee and Business Professionals of America. Melissa was also a scholar athlete and obtained numerous academic awards and achievements while in high school. She volunteered her time as a math tutor, was a participant in Christ’s Outreach to the Blind and Project Shalom. Melissa is inspired to succeed and dedicate herself to helping others realize their potential. She plans to attend the University of Michigan’s Dental School after she earns her undergraduate degree.

Phillip Popp

Roger and Elaine Zatkoff Scholarship

Phillip Popp is one of two recipients of the Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship Award. Phillip has the characteristics and attributes recognized annually by the Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Award. Whether Phillip is singing and writing songs for his rock band, playing baseball, setting school swimming records, or more regularly achieving in the classroom, he is a well-rounded young man. Phillip has compiled an impressive record in the classroom and participated in many extra-curricular activities, including band, and the Spanish and Math Clubs. As mentioned above, he was a member of the baseball and swimming teams. He has performed with his band at local concert venues. Further, he has volunteered his time as a tutor, aided senior citizens, and volunteered at the Special Olympics. We are very pleased to recognize Phillip Popp with the Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship Award.

Kristen Lo

Troy Athens High School

Kristin Lo graduated at the top of her class at Troy Athens High School. Like other scholarship winners, Kristin also excelled in activities outside of the classroom. She participated in the Science Club, Asian Club, Writing Club, Literary Magazine, Math Club, National Honor Society and Safe Rides. A respected member of her high school community, Kristin served as a mentor to other students. While demonstrating her zest for writing, she was published in Northern Lights Magazine, Oakland Community College’s literary magazine. Kristin will undoubtedly be a tremendous asset to the University of Michigan. Thus, we are pleased and proud to award her talents and hard work with the Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship.

Michael Toma

Michael Toma was valedictorian of his graduating class from Southfield-Lathrup Senior High School. Michael is an intelligent young man with a great sense of humor. Michael actively participated as a member of the National Honor Society, Scholars Plus, Student Board, and the Medical Academy. Michael has an eagerness to assist others, including fellow classmates, when the opportunity presents itself. As one of this year’s Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship winners, Michael has displayed the attributes and work ethic that will no doubt make him an important and contributing member of the University of Michigan community.

Jeff Cheek

Jeff Cheek is a graduate of Orchard Lake St. Mary’s High School. He is a member and served as secretary of the National Honor Society during three school years. Mr. Cheek has established himself as an outstanding student and athlete during his time at St. Mary’s. He was freshman class president and a member of the varsity football, wrestling and lacrosse teams. Mr. Cheek has ambitions of being a walk on for the University’s lacrosse team while pursuing a degree in business. Mr. Cheek has displayed the ambition and talent that is deserving of the Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarhip Award.

Emily Cnockaert

Emily Cnockaert is a graduate of Ypsilanti High School. She has established an outstanding record in academics as well as in her extracurricular endeavors. Ms. Cnockaert is senior editor of the Ypsilanti High School magazine and secretary of her school cabinet. She also carries the distinction of being a member of the National Honor Society. Ms. Cnockaert wishes to pursue a major in archeology. Due to Ms. Cnockaert’s outstanding achievements in academics and also in her extracurricular pursuits, she has deservedly been awarded the Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship.

Christopher Corteg

Christopher Corteg is a graduate of Utica High School. He was a member of his school’s Quiz Bowl and Key Club teams. Mr. Corteg has displayed his athletic talents as a member of the varsity football team and also in recreational basketball. He is a distinguished member of the National Honor Society. Currently, Mr. Corteg is undecided in a major but has an interest in pursuing dentistry. He attributes his success to his mother to whom he dedicates this award. Christopher Corteg has displayed the qualities that make it an honor to award him the Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship award.

Jessica McDaniel

Jessica McDaniel is a graduate of L’Anse Cruese North High School. She compiled an outstanding academic record while gaining the respect of peers and teachers alike. Ms. McDaniel also utilized her athletic talents as a member of her high school soccer and basketball teams. She is an active member in her church at St. Peters and also works as a waitress. Among her many accomplishments, Ms. Daniel is a member of the National Honor Society. Ms. McDaniel wishes to pursue a career in electrical or chemical engineering. Based on her exemplary work in academics as well as in her extracurricular activities, Ms. Daniel is in a category well deserving of the Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship.
