Drew Dollins

Clarkston High School

2024/2025
Drew will attend the College of Engineering at the Univerity of Michigan with plans to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. He is a graduate of Clarkston High School, ranked 3rd out of 490 students with a 4.378 GPA. Drew maintained a rigorous course load, including ten AP courses and several college-level courses. Throughout high school, he was a member and group leader in National Honor Society, Business Professionals of America, and class executive board. He also played high school and club soccer. Drew was the recipient of several awards, including National Merit Finalist and AP Scholar with Distinction. Outside of the classroom, he took part in a mechanical engineering internship and several other part-time jobs throughout high school. Drew looks forward to his time at the University of Michigan.
 

Holden Schoenherr

Lake Orion High School
James H. LoPrete Scholarship
2024/2025

Holden Schoenherr will be a freshman at the College of Engineering this fall, with plans to study Civil Engineering, Environmental Sustainability, and Business. Holden finished in the top 1% of his graduating class of over 500 students at Lake Orion High School. There, he maintained a 4.51 GPA, with rigorous honors, AP, and college coursework and is an AP Scholar with Distinction and was very involved in his community in high school. As president of Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society, Secretary of NEHS, Treasurer of MNHS, and is the Co-Founder/President of the Spanish Club, he prides himself in his community involvement. He also enjoys engaging in the community through service organizations including National Honor Society, Student Government, and SNHS. Holden was also a 4-year senior captain of the Cross-Country team and was awarded the National Rural and Small-Town recognition award. Eventually, Holden hopes to continue to graduate school, and obtain a master's degree in business administration.

Aiden Song

Roeper School

2023/2024
Aiden will be enrolling in the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan. He is graduating from The Roeper School in Birmingham, MI where he maintained all A’s in a rigorous course load of Honors and AP classes. He was an AP Scholar with Honor and a National Merit Finalist. He played four years of Varsity Soccer, earning all-state honors, and was named Team Captain his Senior year. He participated in several Jewish youth groups, was in the United States Chess Federation Top 100 in the Nation for his age group, and spent his summers at Camp Tamarack. Aiden looks forward to his time in Ann Arbor, both in and out of the classroom.

Salem Wang

North Farmington High School
James H. LoPrete Scholarship
2023/2024
Salem Wang plans to enroll in the College of LS&A. Salem maintained a 4.0 unweighted GPA throughout high school while managing a rigorous academic schedule consisting of 13 AP classes total–including Calculus BC, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Spanish, and English Language–and 5 dual enrollment classesincluding Calculus III and Differential Equations. In her junior year, she was the recipient of the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award for her exceptional excellence in the natural sciences. She has been praised by teachers and peers alike as a conscientious and innovative student. Salem racked up a number of other accomplishments throughout her high school career as a HOSA international qualifier and 2nd place winner in the HOSA state conference, National Merit Finalist, Cross Country Varsity runner, and AP Scholar with Distinction. She was also an active member of the National Honor Society and tutored students online and in school. Outside of school, Salem is a pianist decorated with numerous regional, national, and international awards under the tutelage of Professor Logan Skelton of the University of Michigan. In addition, she has participated in scientific research, and her research paper is currently being considered for publication in an international high school research journal. 

Hailey Nichols

Eisenhower High School

2022/2023
Hailey is an Eisenhower High School graduate who plans to enroll in the College of LS&A. She is a recipient of the James H. LoPrete Scholarship. Hailey is Senior Class President at Eisenhower as well as a Show Choir Officer and a National Honor Society member. She has starred in multiple theatre productions and been on the Varsity tennis team. Hailey is also active in her church and sings in the Metropolitan Detroit Youth Chorus. She took ten AP classes and will be graduating with a 4.19 GPA. Hailey is an AP Scholar with Distinction and a National Merit Commended Scholar. She is also one of five thousand graduates nationwide to be selected as a 2022 Presidential Scholar Candidate by the U.S. Department of Education. 

Shlok Patel

Oscar A. Carlson High School

2022/2023
Shlok plans to enroll in the College of Literature Science and the Arts and is a recipient of the James H. LoPrete scholarship. Shlok ranked 3rd in the Class of 2022 while maintaining a GPA of 4.2619. Shlok has also made many lasting impacts within his community. Seeing the disruption and struggle of families during the pandemic, he and his twin brother worked together to coordinate and execute multiple vaccine clinics at their high school which successfully vaccinated more than 600 residents. He also coaches middle school robotics where he guides young students throughout the robot development process and motivates them to use their imagination and technical knowledge to tackle challenges. He has finished 8th and 1st at the FTC State Qualifier and led his team to the FTC State Competition 2 years in a row. Shlok was also a member of many school-related clubs like Student Council, National Honor Society, Marauder Captains (leadership/mentor team), Interact Club, Business Professionals of America. He also earned varsity letters in boys tennis and golf. Shlok took a rigorous academic schedule his last two years including AP Classes like Statistics, Biology, Calculus, Computer Science, Psychology, English Literature, and U.S. Government. Shlok was awarded a Certification of Appreciation from the Gibraltar School District for his unreserved dedication for helping his community. 

Jasmine Bains

Canton High School

2021/2022
Jasmine Bains is a Canton High School graduate and has enrolled in the College of LSA. Jasmine finished first in her class with an overall weighted GPA of 4.21. Jasmine had a rigorous academic curriculum including many AP classes in world history, U.S. history, microeconomics, macroeconomics, Spanish, English Composition, calculus, and biology. Jasmine is well-rounded and participates in many clubs and sports. Throughout high school, Jasmine played soccer and field hockey and received awards such as Best Forward Player and Appreciation Awards. Jasmine is an active member of numerous clubs including National Honors Society, Rotary Interact, and Student Council. Jasmine is the Administrative Director on the Executive Board of her school’s National Honors Society where she takes on many responsibilities for the club. Jasmine also volunteers for numerous organizations and specifically with P.B.J. Outreach where she provides toiletries and food to homeless people in Detroit. Jasmine has enjoyed her time at Canton High School and is excited to see what her future at the University of Michigan holds.

MacKenzie Martin

2021/2022
Mackenzie will be a freshman in the Ross School of Business this fall and plans to study Finance and Mandarin Chinese. She is honored to be the recipient of the James H. Loprete Scholarship. Since 8th grade, Mackenzie and her sister have owned and operated MK Blanket Wraps, a nonprofit dedicated to helping Detroit’s homeless through handing out over 1100 sewn Blanket Wraps and teaching sewing programs at Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries. Additionally, Mackenzie has served as Vice President of HAVEN’s Youth Advisory Board and Chairman of the 2019 Detroit Girls’ World Expo. On top of a rigorous academic schedule, she was elected President of Student Council for senior year and Recording Secretary for junior year. Mackenzie has played high level travel soccer for both Michigan Hawks and Royal Oak FC since she was in second grade. She was a four year varsity soccer player and three year varsity field hockey player at Detroit Country Day School. Mackenzie has earned multiple awards including the Yale Book Award, Prudential Spirit of Community Distinguished Finalist Award, Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce Youth Achievement Awards, the Soroptimist International Violet Richardson Award and Grant Recipient, and the 2019 SEEN Magazine Detroit Youth Changemaker Award. Mackenzie is so excited to be at the University of Michigan in the fall. Go Blue!

Madelyn Chau

West Bloomfield High School

2020/2021

Madelyn plans to enroll in the College of LS&A and is the recipient of the James H. LoPrete Scholarship. Madelyn finished in the top 1% of her class with a weighted GPA of 4.13. Madelyn awarded AP scholar with an extensive course curriculum. Madelyn was an active member and leader of West Bloomfield High School clubs. Her sophomore year, she founded in-school Lakers’ Minds Matter Club, which helped address teen crisis associated with mental health issues. Madelyn was also executive board member and political action leader of the EARTH club, where she led fundraisers to install 20-kilowatt solar array. She was the president of the WISE club, where she led to increase number of women’s interest in the STEM field, coordinated guest speakers and planned field trips to spark interest. She was the assistant concertmaster of the symphony orchestra. As a violist, Madelyn nominated by the Orchestra Director to play at Carnegie Hall and awarded the highest ranking at the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association. Madelyn was a research assistant at Oakland University, studying the use of ionic liquids as soil-gas sensing materials for gathering data on permafrost warming and carbon cycles of the Artic. In her spare time, Madelyn attended summer scholar MTU Engineering program, participated of University of Michigan Girls in Music and Technology camp and participated of University of Michigan Coding camp. In addition, she was an academic tutor and volunteered at West Bloomfield Library and local 5k races.

Seta Hagopian

International Academy

2020/2021

Seta plans to enroll in the College of Engineering and is the recipient of the James H. LoPrete Scholarship. Seta was a member of her high school drama club for four years; being President for two years and played many leading roles; she was the Cat in the Hat for “Seussical the Musical” and Donna in “Momma Mia.” Seta was an active member of multiple in-school clubs, where she volunteered at different activities and events. Seta participated in freshman student council, “Bluebirds” female singing ensemble, “Living in Faith Together” religious club, “Big Brother Big Sister” and “Health Opportunities for Perspective Students” Medical club.  She was also a member of the JV POMS team, where she led multiple pom workouts for younger children. Seta was also a member of the National Honor Society and French Honor Society; volunteering at events and tutoring other students. Academically, Seta took an extensive honor class schedule, while finishing with a weighted 4.0 GPA. Outside of school, Seta was a Girl Scout for twelve years and attended many musical programs, singing and playing the piano, flute and guitar. Seta earned the National Merit Scholarship Commended Student in 2020, voted best lead actress of LHS/IAW Theatre in 2019 and awarded International Academy High School International Baccalaureate Music Keystone award.

Jennifer Won

2020/2021

Jennifer plans to enroll in the Ross School of Business and is the recipient of the James H. LoPrete Scholarship. Jennifer was active with in-school activities; which included Project LEAD, DECA, Entrepreneurship club, varsity synchronized swimming and National Honor Society. Her senior year, Nicole was chapter president of DECA, vice president of Entrepreneurship club and fundraising officer of Project LEAD. Jenifer had an extensive list of AP classes, twelve total. This lead to many scholar awards; which include National Merit Scholar Semifinalist, DECA International Finalist, DECA States first place, 2020 Coca-Cola Scholar Semifinalist, AP Scholar with Distinction, National Spanish Exam Bronze Award and multiple competition awards. Jennifer was an active member of the community, which include but not limited to Step of Poverty team, leadership to Troy Student Representative, Support 313 Volunteer and Kumon Academic Tutor.

Kaitlyn Riley

Kaitlyn plans to enroll in the College of LS&A and is the recipient of the James H. Loprete Scholarship. Kaitlyn was a member of multiple in-school clubs, including student council, student government, Spanish club, freshman connection club and charity Key club. She was a member of the National Honor Society and president her senior year. Kaitlyn was also a member of the varsity softball, basketball and golf. She earned multiple coaches awards and most improved player throughout her four years athletically. Kaitlyn was an active member of her community; volunteering her time at Beaumont Hospital delivering flowers and at St. Paul Lutheran Church in multiple bible study activities.

Tarun Sai Bhadri

Tarun is planning to enroll in the College of LS&A with the hope of moving into the Ross School of Business. Tarun is one of the recipients of the James H. LoPrete Scholarship. He has taken various AP class and received numerous awards. Tarun was a HOSA Executive Board Member, serving as President his senior year. He was also a Quiz Bowl Team member, a member of Varsity Tennis, and a BPA Executive Board Member. Tarun balances his academics with many hours of extra-curricular activities and community related events including volunteering at Beaumont Wayne Hospital, Medical Camp, and Premier Oncology Clinic. He is described as having a strong work either and willingness to help others.

Anna Loughman

2018/2019
Anna Loughman is one of the winners of the James H. LoPrete Scholarship. She graduated from Saline High School and plans to enroll in the College of LS&A. She completed multiple AP and Honors courses including Chemistry, Biology, and Statistics. She was awarded a National Merit Commended Scholar, the Gold Honor roll, and an AP Scholar with Honor. Anna was a member of the Saline Marching Band, LINK Crew, and Vice President of Student About Staying Healthy. She also served as Vice President of the National Honor Society her senior year, volunteered at Arbor Hospice and Hospice of Michigan, and waitressed at Stonebridge Gold Club.

Allison Cropsey

Allison Cropsey graduated with a 3.98 GPA at Saline High School, and she plans to enroll in the College of LS&A. She has taken various AP classes including US History, Biology, Calculus AB, and US Government, Politics, and she received the AP Scholar award her sophomore, junior, and senior year. Allison participated in Volleyball and Golf, where she earned JV and Varsity Player of the Year. She has been very involved with her school by serving as Blood Drive Committee Chair for National Honors Society, Flute Section Leader of her high school’s symphonic band, and participating as a member of the Varsity Quiz bowl Team. Allison balanced her academics and extra-curricular activities by volunteering at St. Andrew’s Youth Group, Springhill Teen Service, and Saline Methodist Bell Choir. 

Kelly Ni

Kelly Ni plans to enroll in the School of Engineering and is the recipient of the James H. LoPrete Scholarship.  Kelly has a solid work ethic carrying over a 4.0 GPA.  Kelly has been an active member of the Science Olympiad, Math Olympiad, and Dancin’ Feet Studio. She also participated in the National Honor Society and Summit Tree Lighting Ceremony, helping run the annual community show. Academically, she has taken advantage of the most rigorous Advanced/Honors/AP courses including Calculus BC, Statistics, Biology and Chemistry, to name a few. Kelly has also generously given of her time & energies accumulating over 200 hours of community service throughout her four years of high school.

Jason Jin

Jason Jin plans to enroll in the College of LS&A and is the recipient of the James H. Ryan Klein

2016/2017

Ryan Klein graduated with a 4.28 GPA at Brother Rice High School, and he plans to enroll in the School of Engineering. He has taken various AP classes including Calculus BC, Physics, English, and US Government and he received the AP Scholar award his senior year.  Ryan participated in an engineering internship in the summer of 2015 where he evaluated the integrity of joints created through automated faster systems to define optimal parameters for high quality, high speed joining. He has been very involved with his school by being a member of Varsity Lacrosse, Varsity Football, and Business Club. Ryan balanced his academics and extra-curricular activities by volunteering at Christ Child House, Right to Life, and Special Olympics. 

Derek Lukacs

Brighton High School

2015/2016

Derek Lukacs, the winner of the James H. LoPrete Scholarship graduated from Brighton High School with a 4.2614 GPA and has enrolled in the College of Engineering.  He has completed all of the AP classes offered and 2 college math courses and some online courses, as well.  He earned many Honors & Awards including an Academic Varsity Letter.  Derek makes academics his priority and focus but has contributed to several clubs with leadership roles such as tutor for the After-School Tutoring program, National Honor Society and is mentoring to incoming freshman.  He has worked as a Research Assistant at UofM and loves to golf and snowboard in his spare time.

Joanna Ciatti

Farmington Hills Harrison High School

2014/2015

Joanna Ciatti finished first in her class of 270 at Harrison High School and has enrolled in the College of Engineering.  Joanna participated in The Varsity Swim and Dive Team and the Varsity Track and Field Team.  She was a member of the National Honor Society and participated in the Symphonic Band and Orchestra with the principal being French horn.  She actively participated in the Hawks Help tutor program.  She received the Superintendent’s Award of Excellence in May of 2013. Her teaches characterize her as having a voracious desire to learn, is conscientious driven and has a great work ethic.  She is able to balance all her activities while completing one of the most rigorous schedules available at Harrison High School.

Ali N. Habhab

Dearborn High School
James H. LoPrete Scholarship
2013/2014

Ali Habhab graduated from Dearborn High School and is the recipient of this year’s James LoPrete Scholarship Award.  Ali was president of the Dearborn Center for Math, Science and Technology Student Council from grades 10-12.  He was also a member of the National Honor Society, and served as Treasurer in his senior year.  Ali was also the recipient of several honors, including DCMST Student of the Year 2010-2011, AP Scholar with Distinction, and a Recognition of Excellence Award from the Greening of Detroit for his project on Liquid Organic Compost Fertilizer. 

In addition to his academic achievements, Ali played Varsity Tennis all four years of high school, and was a “Kings of the Court” Tournament Champion.  He also volunteered at Saturday Arab School at Maya, a foreign language development program, for over 430 hours and participated in a political internship at the Wayne County Fix Michigan Center.  Ali plans on attending the Ross Business School.

Shruthi Subramanian

North Farmington High School
James H. LoPrete Scholarship
2012/2013
Shruthi Subramanian attended North Farmington High School, where she graduated as an AP scholar with honors. She amassed a sterling academic record while taking many advanced courses. She obtained numerous awards for her excellence in math, science and French.

Shruthi was President of the Health Occupations Students of America, known as HOSA. She was captain of the JV Soccer team, participated as a Link Crew Leader and she was invited to be a member of Leadership in Education, Acceptance and Diversity (LEAD) group. She also participated in Model UN, NHS, and student government.

Shruthi plays classical music (Carnatic music) on a bamboo flute. As part of her musical endeavors, she participated in many community activities including founding an Indian music charity group “SwaraRagalaya.” This is a music program that raises funds for food and shelter for the homeless. She has also volunteered and raised money for the Sankara Eye Foundation.

She also was a summer intern at the University of Michigan Center for Translational Pathology and she participated in the Wolverine Health Explorers summer program at the University of Michigan.

Joyce Jih

2011/2012
Joyce Jih is this year’s recipient of the James H. LoPrete Scholarship. During high school, Joyce participated in Synchronized Swimming, Chinese Club, Orchestra, Students Against Destructive Decisions, National Honor Society and many other extra-curricular activities. She also volunteered at Beaumont Hospital in the Medical Unit and Oncology Ward. Joyce also performed research at the Life Science Institute at the University of Michigan. She is a National Merit Semifinalist, recipient of the Harvard Prize Club Book Award, the American Chinese Association – Ray Young Scholarship, the CLASS National Essay Contest – Bronze Apple Award.

Jenna Ross

2010/2011
Jenna Ross is this year’s recipient of the James H. LoPrete Scholarship. Jenna attended Adlai Stevenson High School. During high school, she also took classes at the Utica Center for Math, Science and Technology. Perhaps most notably, she obtained a United States Design Patent for one of her inventions. She was a member of the World Champion ThunderChickens. She participated in the National Honor Society and FIRST Lego League. She was also involved in several community-related projects.

James A. Lee

James A. Lee is this year’s recipient of the James H. LoPrete Scholarship. James is a graduate of Rochester Adams High School, where he graduated at the top of his class. James is a National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist, an AP Scholar Award winner, compiled several accolades in the Michigan Math Competition, and achieved Student of the Year in AP Calculus in 2007, and Physics and AP Chemistry in 2008. As a well-rounded young man, James played on the golf team, played piano in several school, community and statewide events, participated in the Marching Band Drumline for three years and participated in his church. Indeed, James embodies the characteristics and attributes that our Club wishes to recognize.

Katherine Lu

2008/2009
Katherine Lu is the recipient of the James H. LoPrete Scholarship. Katherine graduated from Canton High School with high honors, where she participated in Student Congress, Math Olympiad, Science Olympiad, National Honor Society, Asian-Pacific American Club, Spanish-American Latino Student Association and Varsity Quiz Bowl. Her various honors and awards included AP Scholar, National Merit Scholar Semi-Finalist, Level 10 Piano Semi-Finalist and various other awards and distinctions. Katherine is also active in her community working at the Detroit Soup Kitchen, Hand by Hand Education Foundation, Relay for Life through the American Cancer Society and assisting at a Chinese School as an Art teacher.

Liting Chen

Liting Chen is the 2007 recipient of the James H. LoPrete Scholarship. Liting attended Novi High School where she graduated with high honors. She participated in Model United Nations, Teen Court, Science Club, Student Congress, FIRST Robotics, and the National Honor Society. Her community involvement is also noteworthy, as she volunteered at Botsford General Hospital, Novi Parks & Recreation and participated in tutoring and teaching aide programs. Liting was a National Merit Semifinalist and recognized by the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press as Student of the Week. Liting Chang truly embodies the qualities recognized by the James H. LoPrete Scholarship.

Tina Wang

Tina Wang is this year’s recipient of the James H. LoPrete Scholarship. Tina compiled a most impressive academic record. In addition, she served as a Student Council Representative, and participated as a member of the National Honor Society, Diversity Club and cross country team. Within the community, Tina has volunteered her time as a hospice volunteer and an early literary volunteer. She also is a talented pianist, as demonstrated by her numerous awards. During high school, Tina achieved the following recognitions: AP Scholar with Distinction, National Merit Letter of Commendation, and math, science and computer program awards. Tina plans to attend medical school to be a neurosurgeon, after obtaining her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan.

David Budde

David Budde is this year’s worthy recipient of the James H. LoPrete Scholarship. David is a graduate of Detroit Catholic Central High School where he compiled a most impressive academic record. David excelled in all classes; however, he surpassed even the most talented of students in the areas of math and science. David dedicated himself not only to improving himself, but also improving his school as demonstrated by the large role he played in further developing the school’s website. In addition to his academic achievements, David participated as a member of the Catholic Cenbtral’s symphonic and marching bands. As might be expected, he plans to be a member of the Michigan Marching Band. Most importantly, David is an honest and sincere individual with a strong character who demonstrates the qualities befitting the James H. LoPrete Scholarship.

Sushil Gupta

Sushil Gupta is a graduate of Troy High School. Mr. Gupta’s achievements in and out of the classroom led to our club’s decision to award him with the James H. LoPrete Scholarship. He attained an impressive academic record utilizing his intellect and creative ability for understanding concepts. Equally impressive is his involvement in many extracurricular activities. He served as President of Students Against Drunk Driving; President of the Math and Physics Clubs; Secretary of the Science Olympiad; participant in Quiz Bowl; and Vice-President of the National Honor Society. He also participated on the track and cross country teams. He even found time to volunteer at William Beaumont Hospital. One of his teachers describes Mr. Gupta as “a unique and refreshing combination of maturity, confidence, motivation, creativity and intelligence.”
